Café Lava is seeking a skilled and experienced qualified Chef to join our team and support the day-to-day management of our café kitchen. The position is responsible for food preparation, menu planning, quality control, stock management, and supporting a high-standard dining experience. This is a full-time, permanent position.

Key Responsibilities

Kitchen Management & Food Preparation

* Assist in managing daily kitchen operations to maintain efficient workflow.
* Oversee and carry out preparation and cooking of menu items in accordance with venue standards.
* Maintain a clean, safe, and organised kitchen environment, including general cleaning duties.

Menu Planning & Cost Control

* Plan and develop café menus, incorporating seasonal and customer-preferred dishes.
* Undertake inventory planning, manage stock levels and order required food supplies to minimise waste and maintain budget efficiency.

Quality Control & Food Safety

* Monitor quality, taste, presentation, and portion consistency across all food items.
* Ensure all hygiene, food safety, and workplace health standards are met.

Communication & Collaboration

* Work closely with managers, dietitians, kitchen staff, and waiting staff to coordinate meal preparation and service.
* Demonstrate cooking techniques and train junior staff where needed.
* Respond promptly to food preparation and service issues to maintain high standards.

Training & Staff Support

* Participate in training, mentoring, and skill development of kitchen staff.
* Guide staff on hygiene, safety procedures, and efficient kitchen practices.

Food Preservation

* Manage freezing, preservation, and storage of ingredients to maximise shelf life and maintain quality.

Customer Service

* Occasionally assist with customer service, including addressing dietary requests and special meal requirements.

Skills & Qualifications

* Minimum associate degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma qualification in hospitality management or commercial cookery or at least 3 years of relevant experience as a Chef in lieu of formal qualifications.
* At least 1 year of proven experience as a Chef, preferably in a café or casual dining environment.
* Strong culinary skills with expertise in menu planning and efficient kitchen operations.
* Knowledge of cost management, stock control, and budgeting principles.
* Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
* Strong commitment to food safety, hygiene, and cleanliness standards.

Working Conditions

* Requires standing for extended periods, working with hot equipment, and performing in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
* Availability for shift work, including mornings, weekends, and public holidays.
