Financial Controller Overview
We are looking for a qualified and passionate Financial Controller to join our team.
This position requires the Financial Controller to assist the CFO in ensuring the effective operation of the finance department and all accounting matters relating to payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable and financial accounts.
The Financial Controller is responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial information in the general ledger and ensuring that month end procedures are completed within required timeframes.
The role also provides critical support to the CFO in the area of financial compliance reporting.
The Financial Controller has direct contact with a number of stakeholders across the organisation (including the Principal, Administration Office staff, teaching staff and external stakeholders).
This is a full time, permanent position, available for an immediate start.
The hours required will be Monday - Friday, 8am to 4pm.
Key Responsibilities
Preparation of monthly and quarterly Board Financial Reports including Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet and Cash Flows for review by CFO.
This will include associated work papers, journals and reconciliations.
Monitor and analyse regular financial management information to ensure that associated information systems are maintained and that regular reports are accurate and available to the CFO.
Be actively involved in the analysis of monthly financial reports for all entities.
Preparation of ad hoc management reports as requested by the CFO.
Adhere to finance policies and procedures as well as applicable accounting standards.
Assume custodian of the general ledgers, oversee the monthly reconciliation of the general ledgers in a timely fashion and ensure the general ledger system is set up to adhere to all accounting standards and reporting requirements.
Statutory Compliance and Reporting
Preparation of the entities annual audited financial statements.
Audit preparation and enquiries including working papers and reconciliations prior to audit commencement.
Preparation of all other statutory accounts and annual returns as required.
Accounting and acquittal of grants and donations.
Preparation and lodgement of annual FBT returns and oversee the preparation of the quarterly GST business activity statements and monthly instalment activity statements.
Preparation of all Commonwealth and State Funding returns and acquittals within required timeframes.
Preparation of annual Financial Questionnaires.
Applications for grants and funding.
Any other activities as requested by the CFO.
Payroll
Review/Process fortnightly payroll ensuring that individual pays are processed in accordance with relevant awards and individual contracts.
Ensure PAYG and superannuation payments are paid in accordance with ATO and other relevant legislative requirements and within required timeframes.
Liaise with HR to ensure employee and payroll records are current and up to date.
Prioritise and address staff payroll queries to maintain a positive workplace environment.
Complete end of year payroll procedures.
Cash Management and Budgeting
Assist the CFO with the ongoing development and implementation of budget systems and controls, including 5-10 Year Budget and analysis of budget performance with budget holders and the Leadership team.
Under the direction of the CFO, develop and implement effective cash management budgeting techniques including investment and borrowing opportunity assessments to maximise the entities financial resources.
Cash flow management.
Asset Register
Maintain accounting and physical movements within the asset register.
Conduct periodic stock takes of assets.
Develop/review an effective system of internal control to prevent the loss of assets.
General
Work collaboratively with, and provide professional guidance to the accounts team other administrative staff.
Identify and recommend changes to processes that contribute to continuous improvement.
Any other tasks as reasonably directed by the CFO.
Meet all responsibilities in relation to Workplace Health and Safety.
Adhere to the Code of Conduct and all Policies and Procedures of the organisations.
Qualifications and Experience
Relevant tertiary qualifications (Bachelor of Accounting, Business, Commerce) or equivalent and relevant experience in a similar role in a medium sized organisation.
Hold a current Positive Notice Blue Card or have the ability to obtain one.
CPA or CA accounting qualification, or studying towards one, would be highly regarded.
Experience in a school or educational environment.
Key Skills
Strong skills and experience in using accounting software packages.
Experience with TASS highly desirable.
Professional manner and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Organised, able to prioritise and meet deadlines.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
High level of accuracy and attention to detail is essential.
Ability to multi-task and work in a demanding work environment.
Demonstrated skills in working with and knowledge of Google Suite, Apple, Microsoft Office programs.
Strong literacy and numeracy skills including intermediate to advance excel skills.
Understanding of what a strong internal control environment should look like in a school context and be able to recommend improvements in controls.
