About the Department

The Child Inpatient Unit (CIPU) is part of Austin Health's Infant Child and Youth Mental Health Services (ICYMHS). We care for children from metropolitan and regional Victoria, NSW and Tasmania at present. The CIPU is a 12-bed unit which provides specialist inpatient psychiatric assessment and treatment for young people up to the age of 12 years with severe emotional and/or behavioural disturbance. Our community teams are currently based primarily at Austin Hospital in Heidelberg.

About the role

The role requires the Registered Nurse to plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based nursing care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to achieve optimal healthcare outcomes for our patients.

A regular day will see you:

- Prioritise and deliver care within scope of practice and according to nursing care plan.
- Facilitate active patient/family participation in delivery of goals of care, including handover.
- Recognise and seek support when input is required from senior/experienced staff.
- Active participation in huddles and handover process recognising deviation from handover content to clinical presentation
- Provide accurate, accessible and timely written records of clinical work, as required in CYMHS standards of documentation.

About you

You will be someone who has excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with consumers, families/carers, colleagues, clinical staff, and other health and welfare service

To be successful in this role, you'll bring with you:

- A clear understanding of and practice in the principles of recovery-orientated trauma informed and patient focused/family-centered care.
- Collaborative practice and expertise in engaging children and their families within a clinical setting.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including expressing own viewpoints respectfully and valuing the perspectives of others.
- An awareness and practice knowledge of relevant legislation and practice frameworks (e.g. Mental Health Act and Child Youth and Families Act
