Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer / Senior Mechanical Engineer to play a key role in the delivery of high-quality mechanical design solutions across a diverse portfolio of industrial projects.
This is a senior, hands-on technical role focused on design leadership, technical execution, and mentoring. You will work closely with the Mechanical Engineering Manager, project managers, workshop teams, and clients to ensure designs are safe, compliant, manufacturable, and delivered to a high standard.
You will be trusted to take ownership of complex design packages, contribute to technical decision-making, and support continuous improvement across engineering processes and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & Engineering Delivery
* Lead the mechanical design of complex systems, with a strong focus on materials handling, conveying, and industrial equipment.
* Develop concept, detailed, and fabrication-ready designs aligned with project scope, standards, and budgets.
* Produce high-quality drawings, models, calculations (for Senior Mechanical Engineer candidates), and technical documentation suitable for manufacture and construction.
* Ensure designs are practical, safe, and optimised for fabrication, installation, and maintenance.
* Support site activities including design clarification, technical queries, and commissioning where required.
Technical Leadership & Collaboration
* Act as a senior technical reference point within the engineering team.
* Provide technical guidance, design reviews, and mentoring to junior engineers and designers.
* Collaborate closely with project management, workshop, procurement, and site teams to ensure seamless project delivery.
* Contribute engineering input during tendering, scoping, and estimating phases.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
* Ensure all designs comply with relevant Australian Standards, client specifications, WHS requirements, and internal QA processes.
* Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and hazard identification processes.
* Support the continuous improvement of engineering standards, templates, and workflows.
* Maintain accurate, traceable documentation in line with ISO 9001 quality systems.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
* Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, standardisation, and constructability.
* Support the adoption of improved tools, systems, and design methodologies.
* Contribute ideas that enhance safety, quality, cost, and delivery performance across projects.
Skills & Experience
Essential
* Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or a related discipline.
* 7+ years' experience in mechanical design or mechanical engineering within an industrial environment.
* Strong experience in materials handling, conveying systems, and industrial machinery.
* Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Inventor.
* Proven ability to deliver complex designs from concept through to fabrication.
* Solid understanding of Australian Standards, WHS requirements, and engineering best practice.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable
* Experience working in food & beverage, FMCG, manufacturing, resources, or logistics sectors.
* Exposure to site installation and commissioning activities.
* Experience working within ISO 9001 quality systems.
* Working knowledge of Autodesk Inventor design automation tools, including i Logic, i Parts, and i Assemblies, with the ability to apply automation to improve design efficiency, standardisation, and repeatability (for Senior Mechanical Designer candidates).
* RPEQ or progress toward registration (for Senior Mechanical Engineer candidates).
