The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity exists for a System Administrator to join a collaborative IT Services team. The role is responsible for the administration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of critical systems that underpin academic, research, and corporate operations.
You will work closely with infrastructure specialists, service owners, and stakeholders to ensure systems are resilient, secure, and aligned with organisational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
* Administer, monitor, and maintain on-premises and cloud-based systems and infrastructure.
* Manage Windows and/or Linux server environments, including patching, upgrades, and lifecycle management.
* Support identity and access management platforms (e.g. Active Directory, Azure AD).
* Implement and maintain system security controls, backups, and disaster recovery processes.
* Provide advanced troubleshooting and third-level support for complex system issues.
* Maintain accurate system documentation, procedures, and operational standards.
* Contribute to system enhancements, infrastructure projects, and technology refresh initiatives.
* Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to deliver reliable IT services.
About You
* Demonstrated experience as a System Administrator in a medium to large enterprise environment.
* Strong technical skills across Windows Server and/or Linux platforms.
* Experience with virtualisation technologies (e.g. VMware, Hyper-V).
* Exposure to cloud services such as Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365.
* Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, system security, and backup technologies.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Skills and Experience
* Experience working in higher education, research, or public-sector environments.
* Scripting and automation experience (PowerShell, Bash).
* Familiarity with monitoring tools, configuration management, or DevOps practices.
* Knowledge of ITIL or IT service management frameworks.
