Research associate in social-ecological systems

The primary purpose of the position is to
contribute to two Australian Research Council
projects focused on the environmental
sustainability of agricultural systems. The two
projects are:

- 'Pathways to agri-food supply chains that

co-benefit people and nature' within the
School of Biology & Environmental Science
and the Centre for Agriculture and the
Bioeconomy; and
- 'The local, regional and global human

networks influencing adoption of
sustainable practices in food production
systems' within the School of Architecture
and Built Environments and the Centre for
the Environment.
The Research Associate will join a research
group dedicated to decision science and
social-ecological systems research looking to
empower communities and governments to
make more sustainable choices about
agricultural production and food consumption.

This position provides an exciting opportunity
to be a key member of a dynamic team
working across the fields of biodiversity
conservation, decision science, complex
systems science, sustainable production and
consumption, human nutrition and behavioural
sciences. They will contribute to the
development of datasets and cutting edge tools
that build an understanding of the impacts and
benefits of different food system interventions
to recover biodiversity whilst maintaining and
improving human well-being.

This position reports to the Future Fellow for
supervision, workload management and for
Performance Planning and Review (PPR).

**Key responsibilities include**:

- Proactively engage and work in close

collaboration with the' project teams.
- Compile literature and maintain large

databases of scholarly articles.
- Lead the development of two datasets:
1) a dataset of the social, economic and
ecological outcomes of biodiversity-focused
interventions in agri-food systems; and
2) a dataset of the social, economic and
behavioural factors influencing adoption of
sustainable practices in agri-food systems;
both through data compilation and
collaboration in working groups with
international stakeholders.
- Produce data visualizations and conduct

exploratory analyses.
- Assist in conducting interviews with farmers

in regional areas, including coordination
and management of interview notes and
relevant documentation.
- Contribute as a team member to data

collection, data analysis, and conference
presentations, working with a range of
collaborators in ecology, agriculture, social
sciences, health and nutrition.
- Contribute to publication of scientific reports

and scholarly articles in internationally
recognized peer-reviewed journals.
- Attend meetings of relevant working groups

and committees.
- Provide assistance to other projects

including PhD, Masters and Honours
student projects, as required.
- Implementing and administering University

policy within the Faculty with respect to
equitable access to education and
workplace health and safety.
To ensure job flexibility the successful
appointee may be required to:

- perform any other duties as nominated by

the University consistent with the relevant
classification descriptors detailed in the
Enterprise Agreement. Staff undertaking
any new duties will receive training;
- participate in job rotation or multiskilling in

consultation with their supervisor;
- work across campuses.

To be appointed as a Research Associate the
successful applicant must meet the position
classification standards outlined in the QUT
Enterprise Agreement (Academic Staff).

**Type of appointment**
This appointment will be offered on a fixed
- term, full-time basis for one (1) year. Flexible
working arrangements such as part-time work
will be considered.

**Location**

Gardens Point campus.

Selection Criteria

1. Completion of a Bachelor degree with
Honours or a Masters degree (with a
significant research component), in a
discipline of relevance to the research topic
(e.g. environmental sciences, social
sciences, agricultural sciences, nutrition
and health sciences).

2. Highly developed written and oral
communication skills, including at least one
peer-reviewed publication, ideally as lead
author.

3. Experience in the use of web searching
software such as Web of Science and
referencing software such as Endnote to
search for and compile scholarly literature
on specific topics.

4. Experience in literature synthesis methods
such as systematic literature reviews,
meta-analysis or qualitative evidence
synthesis.

5. Demonstrated experience in building and
working with large datasets, including
developing data management plans.

6. Demonstrated experience in data analysis,
coding and development of graphical
outputs in a relevant programming
language (e.g. R).

**Remuneration and Benefits**

The classification for this position is Academic
Level A (LEVA) which has an annual
remuneration range of $83,894 to $113,836 pa.
Which is inclusive of an annual salary range of
$70,891 to $96,193 pa, 17% superannuation
and leave loading.
