Where You'll Be Working
You'll join the Consultation Liaison (CL) Psychiatry Team, a specialist mental health service providing in‐reach to John Hunter Hospital, The Maitland Hospital (including Kurri Kurri Hospital) and Belmont Hospital. The team supports patients with complex interactions between physical and mental health, including those recovering from trauma, experiencing psychiatric or psychological problems related to medical illness, presenting after suicide attempts, or living with delirium, dementia and BPSD. The culture is supportive, collaborative and clinically focused, with a strong ethos of excellent, comprehensive care, timely support for referrers and a genuine team approach to managing workload and clinical challenges.
About The Role
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist - Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Team, you'll work alongside consumers and their families to complete comprehensive mental health triage, assessment, safety planning and short‐term interventions for patients with comorbid medical and psychiatric issues or somatic presentations. You'll move across emergency, medical and surgical settings, providing expert mental health input, advice on consent and anxiety management, and support to staff caring for patients in distress or crisis. You'll enjoy a balance of autonomy and teamwork: managing your own clinical load while building strong relationships with general hospital teams, contributing to staff wellbeing, and offering education and support to a wide range of professional groups. Each day offers variety and clinical challenge, supporting ongoing growth and advanced practice in liaison psychiatry.
About You
* Bringing current authority to practice as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA with relevant post‐registration qualifications and at least 3 years' experience working in Psychiatry Liaison of their specified post‐graduate qualification, or such other qualifications or equivalent experience deemed appropriate by the public hospital or public health organisation.
* Eligibility to drive in NSW and willingness to travel for work purposes.
* Advanced clinical skills and experience in mental health assessment, triage and safety planning.
* A strong interest in consultation liaison psychiatry and working with comorbid medical and psychiatric presentations.
* Highly effective written and verbal communication skills to support clear, timely liaison with referrers and hospital teams.
* The ability to work autonomously while contributing actively to a supportive multidisciplinary team.
* A commitment to ongoing learning, reflection and professional development, including participation in supervision and clinical review.
* A positive, team‐focused approach that supports a high‐performing, well‐supported CL team culture.
You'll be supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team, the Area Director of Liaison Psychiatry, the Service Manager and the Director of Nursing. You'll have access to structured orientation in a supernumerary capacity, regular supervision, monthly Clinical Review and Journal Club, and daily safety huddles to support safe practice, learning and growth.
