About the team The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the Australian Government's national measurement authority. NMI leads, maintains and regulates Australia's measurement system, playing an important role in the Australian economy. Australians rely on measurement every day to stay safe and healthy, to be confident they get what they pay for, and to level the playing field for business. NMI's sovereign measurement capabilities underpin these outcomes for Australians, contributing to a various measures aimed at maintaining national and international confidence in Australian goods and services. Our work spans the economy, delivering over $800 million annually in direct benefits to Australians and Australian industry. NMI also administers the regulatory framework for measurement which supports around $1.4 trillion of economic activity in Australia each year. NMI is an integral part of Australia's critical scientific infrastructure, supporting the government's objectives in a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, health, food safety, trade, the environment, defence, energy, the integrity of sport and law enforcement. The Strategy and Operations Branch within NMI has a wide remit and includes leading NMI's cross-branch activities in the areas of policy development, ministerial and government relations, stakeholder engagement, communications, workforce capability, international relations, and work health and safety. The branch coordinates NMI's input to policymakers across government, leads much of the division's involvement in budget processes, and ensures the successes of NMI's experts are clearly communicated to decision makers and the public. We have EL1 and APS6 positions available in the Policy and Engagement Section within the Strategy and Operations Branch. You will work with NMI's expert scientists and regulators to ensure that NMI's value is recognised across government, and that government is aware of potential emerging needs for measurement science. You will also have the opportunity to develop NMI's policy priorities and support NMI in Budget processes. What's in it for you? Our ideal candidate Suitable candidates will possess the following skills, experience and expertise: A strategic perspective, innovative thinking and sound judgement. Excellent written and oral communication skills. The ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders. A flexible and adaptable approach and the capacity to work sustainably in a dynamic environment. Demonstrated experience in developing collaborative working relationships with external and internal stakeholders, preferably across government and/or with external industry stakeholders. Demonstrated experience in working in a science policy or technical policy area. Demonstrated ability to apply and communicating scientific knowledge in a government policy context. Understanding of Budget processes and the demonstrated capacity to contribute to the development of New Policy proposals. In addition, for EL1 level candidates we would expect that you have demonstrated ability to develop and manage staff, and consistent delivery of high-quality outputs. The key duties of the position include At the APS6 level, duties may include: Preparing written advice for decision-makers, including briefs, reports, correspondence, recommendations, and presentations, and responses to coordination requests. Supporting colleagues to contribute their technical expertise to public policy processes, including to showcase the impact of measurement in the Australian economy and society. Liaising with key NMI stakeholders including other Commonwealth, State and Territory agencies Providing policy, procurement, and project management advice to support the implementation of NMI's strategic priorities. At the EL1 level, duties may also include: Representing NMI at government and industry forums and maintaining relationships with associated stakeholders. Briefing stakeholders including Ministers and senior Executives on emerging issues, including in relation NMI strategic priorities including changing demands for measurement science and sustainability. Supervising and developing staff in the team. Taking responsibility for meeting team objectives and progressing work, including procurement and contract management processes. Note that both the roles may also include supporting other teams within the Strategy and Operations Branch as needed
