AI Developer

Temporary, up to 24 months, 35 hour working week

Hybrid and Flexible working arrangements - Office location flexible across Revenue NSW locations (Parramatta, Lithgow, Wollongong, Gosford and Maitland)

DCS Clerk Grade 7/8

Salary - $113,574 - $125,720 base plus super

We are the state's principal revenue management agency and are a part of the Department of Customer Service (DCS). We manage taxes, fines, debts and administer grants in a fair, efficient and timely manner. Through this we give back to the community and fund essential State services for the people of NSW.

About the role

The Automation Developer sits within the Intelligent Process Automation team in the Strategy & Innovation function and plays a key role in delivering intelligent automation solutions that enhance and extend traditional RPA capabilities across Revenue NSW.

This role is responsible for delivering enterprise‐grade AI automation solutions that are safe, governed and production‐ready. You will design and implement chatbots, RAG‐based solutions and intelligent processing services that are embedded within automated workflows and supported by appropriate assurance, monitoring and exception‐handling mechanisms.

Success in this role requires demonstrated experience taking AI‐enabled solutions from design through to live operation, including managing AI uncertainty, integrating multiple systems and services, and supporting solutions once deployed.

You will work closely with automation developers, Blue Prism and Power Platform specialists, and business teams to design and integrate intelligent services that complement RPA workflows—such as document classification and extraction, conversational interfaces, and rules‐ or AI‐assisted decision support.

Operating in an agile, multidisciplinary environment, you will contribute to a growing intelligent automation capability that blends custom software development, AI services, and automation platforms to deliver measurable outcomes.

Key responsibilities

As an Automation Developer, you will:

* Design, build, test, deploy and support production-ready AI automation solutions across the full delivery lifecycle (from technical design through to release, hypercare and steady-state operations)
* Develop and maintain the integration layer (APIs, services, connectors and orchestration components) that enables AI capabilities and automation platforms to operate reliably at scale
* Deliver AI-enabled capabilities end-to-end - including chatbots, virtual agents, RAG patterns and intelligent document processing; integrating with enterprise data sources and business systems to produce trustworthy outcomes
* Collaborate with product owners, designers and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions
* Apply software engineering best practices, including clean code, testing, documentation and peer review
* Build and operate cloud-based services and integrations (including AWS and Azure where relevant) with a focus on scalability, resilience, observability and cost-aware execution of AI services
* Apply secure‐by‐design principles, including authentication, authorisation and data protection
* Support production systems, including troubleshooting, performance optimisation and continuous improvement
* Contribute to shared technical standards, reusable components and a culture of continuous learning
* The team's head office is based in Parramatta, and there may be an occasional requirement to attend this office to come together for purpose.

About You

To be successful in this position you will demonstrate:

* Proven experience delivering and supporting production‐ready automation and AI‐enabled solutions, with evidence of taking solutions from design through to live operation and ongoing support (not just proofs of concept)
* Experience with modern programming languages and frameworks (such as .NET, C#, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python or similar)
* Experience designing and consuming APIs and integrating systems across enterprise environments
* Demonstrated experience implementing AI‐enabled capabilities in production, such as chatbots, virtual agents, Retrieval‐Augmented Generation (RAG), intelligent processing or similar services, with an understanding of AI limitations, validation and assurance requirements
* Experience working with cloud platforms, preferably AWS and Azure, including compute, integration and data services
* A solid understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC), agile delivery practices and DevOps principles
* Strong analytical and problem‐solving skills, with the ability to translate business needs into robust technical solutions
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary delivery teams
* Relevant tertiary qualifications in IT, computer science, engineering or equivalent practical experience.
* Commitment to Customer Service. You have a customer focused mindset and strive to put the customer at the forefront of everything you do.

Working at DCS

* 35-hour working week, with opportunities for flex leave where additional hours are worked
* Revenue NSW is proud of our diverse and regional teams.
