Clerk Grade: 7/8

Employment Type: Ongoing, Full-time (multiple positions)

Salary Range: $113,574 - $125,720 per annum plus Superannuation

Hybrid work arrangements, Parramatta or Gosford. Office attendance required 2–3 days per week.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within NSW Fair Trading for a Senior Investigator.

We are seeking professionals who have strong analytical and investigative capabilities, excellent communication skills, and a passion for achieving fair and just outcomes. This role will lead investigations into serious breaches of consumer, property, and licensing laws across NSW.

About the Team

Rental

You will join a team led by an investigation manager that includes 7 investigators. This position is part of the Rental Branch and sits within the Compliance and Resolution Directorate.

The team's objective is to prevent, detect, and respond to breaches of rental laws through investigations, compliance, and enforcement actions. The team works collaboratively to uphold rental laws, proactively manage risks, and protect the rights of tenants and landlords across NSW.

The role of Senior Investigator may require supervision of a small team of Inspectors and reports to a Principal Inspector.

Consumer Affairs

You will join a team led by an investigation manager and including 20 investigators. The team undertakes investigations, including complex matters, related to the Australian Consumer Law, the motor industry, including dealers, repairers and recyclers, charitable fundraising and other laws.

The role of Senior Investigator reports to a Principal Investigator and generally works within their small team of 5 to undertake the allocated investigations. The objective of the team is to determine whether there are breaches and improve the compliance of traders with relevant laws, reduce consumer detriment and take appropriate and strategic enforcement action when needed.

Strata and Property Services

You will join a team led by an Investigation Manager and comprising up to 14 investigators. The team undertakes investigations, including complex matters, relating to real estate agents and strata managing agents.

The Senior Investigator reports to a Principal Investigator and generally works within a small team, while also collaborating closely with other teams across the branch. The team's objective is to conduct high‐quality investigations into alleged breaches of strata and property legislation and to take proportionate, strategic enforcement action where appropriate.

About the Role

* Lead and conduct complex investigations into breaches of consumer, tenancy and property legislation.
* Collect, analyse and assess evidence to support enforcement and prosecution outcomes.
* Interview witnesses and keep them engaged throughout investigation, prepare briefs of evidence and present findings in formal proceedings.
* Provide high‐quality advice and reports on investigative matters.
* Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure fair, consistent regulatory outcomes.

To be successful in this role you will have:

* Investigative expertise – demonstrated experience conducting complex, high‐volume investigations.
* Regulatory knowledge – understanding of compliance, enforcement and administrative law.
* Analytical capability – ability to interpret and apply legislation and evaluate evidence.
* Communication – strong written and verbal skills, including report and brief preparation, with the ability to engage with customers and support vulnerable complainants through the investigative process.
* Teamwork – ability to work collaboratively within a fast‐paced regulatory environment to achieve impactful, timely regulatory outcomes.

Essential criteria

* Certificate IV in Government Investigations (or equivalent experience/willingness to obtain).
* Understanding of investigative principles, rules of evidence, and brief preparation.
* A current NSW driver's licence and ability to travel as required.
