Primary objective
As part of the Darwin Languages Centre leadership team, the Assistant Principal will collaborate to provide effective leadership for
languages education in the areas of teaching and learning, curriculum, and professional development for staff including assessment and
reporting, student and staff wellbeing as well as coordinating Darwin Languages Centre operations.
Context statement
The Darwin Languages Centre provides in-school language programs for 22 schools across the Greater Darwin region teaching 4,700
students each week. DLC also provides an extensive face-to-face after-school-hours program for approximately 250 Transition to Year
12 students, delivering 11 languages throughout the week. The Centre provides local and national educational leadership and advocacy
in all aspects of language education. The Centre is also home to Darwin Adult Short Courses with classes running most nights of the week
and on Saturdays. Assessment and reporting for the Centre is in line with the Australian Curriculum Languages.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. As part of the leadership team, advocate for the school's vision with a focus on a shared respectful culture that challenges and sets
high expectations of both students and teachers to drive student outcomes, and effective teaching that promotes capable and
independent learners.
1. Provide educational leadership in whole school curriculum development, implementation, assessment, and reporting, consistent with
the Australian Curriculum and NT DET priorities, policies and guidelines including working closely with partner schools to implement
high-quality Language programs across the Greater Darwin region.
1. Establish expectations for all staff to achieve high standards and build their capacity through professional development, performance
management and teacher registration requirements.
1. Develop and maintain relationships with the DLC school community to advocate for the value of languages education and the school's
vision.
1. Provide advice, data, and support to the principal on educational, operational, and administrative matters to achieve and evaluate
educational outcomes and strategic goals.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated currency of languages teaching experience and educational leadership in the development of Language teaching and
learning programs in a school environment.
2. Proven ability to effectively lead, collaborate and communicate with colleagues, parents and the broader community to achieve high
Language educational outcomes for students.
3. Demonstrated experience leading whole school curriculum development in line with the Australian Curriculum, Languages including
assessment and reporting policies, requirements and procedures.
4. Experience working collaboratively in a school Leadership Team to achieve goals of the Annual Strategic Improvement Plan.
5. Experience in working with leadership teams across schools, as well as people from diverse cultures, to facilitate programs and events.
1. Demonstrated ability to build a shared culture of high expectations, while developing and maintaining effective interpersonal and
cross-cultural relationships within and beyond the school community.
Desirable
1. High level of language proficiency and recent teaching experience in either Mandarin, Japanese or Indonesian Language.

This position manages an after-school hours program and requires flexible working hours.
