ABOUT IMPROVE SURFING Improve Surfing (improvesurfing.com) is a professional surf coaching business based in Currumbin, Gold Coast, delivering high-performance surf coaching, video analysis, surf skate training, mobility training, and events to surfers at all levels. With over 300 students coached, we operate a structured, methodology-driven program serving a diverse, multilingual international student base.ABOUT THE ROLE We are seeking an experienced Sports Development Officer to lead all coaching and community programs as Head Coach. This is a specialist, senior role requiring a combination of competitive surfing experience, professional coaching expertise, and multilingual communication skills essential to our international client base. The successful candidate will develop and implement surf sports development programs, promote participation across the community, and represent the business at the highest professional level.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESDevelop, implement and evaluate structured surf sports development programs and participation pathways for community members and athletes across all skill levels, from beginners through to advanced surfers, in alignment with best-practice coaching methodologiesPromote and grow community participation in surfing and related disciplines including surf skate, mobility training, and events through outreach to schools, clubs, surf associations, and local organisations, and support the development of long-term athlete pathwaysGuide and mentor individual surfers and groups in skill development through personalised coaching, video-based performance analysis, and tailored training programsPlan, coordinate, and oversee surf competitions, training camps, specialty courses, and events including the Apnea program and wave pool training sessionsBuild and maintain partnerships with schools, sporting clubs, and community organisations to develop grassroots surf participation and community engagement in the sportMonitor and assess the impact of sports development programs through athlete performance tracking, regular program reviews, and continuous curriculum improvementDeliver coaching sessions across the full program in English, Portuguese, and Spanish to meet the needs of the business's multilingual international student basePrepare and guide competitive surfers through high-performance training programs targeting QS and Challenger SeriesApply advanced surf video analysis and performance assessment methodologies to provide technical feedback and drive athlete improvement across all programsESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS — ALL MUST BE METLanguages: Full professional fluency in English, Portuguese, and Spanish is mandatory. The majority of our student base communicates in these languages and coaching is conducted across all three.Competitive surf experience: Must have competed professionally in surfing at a minimum of QS (Qualifying Series) level for at least 2 years. Evidence of WSL competition results or equivalent will be required. This is required given the role involves preparing athletes for Challenger Series competition.Coaching experience: Must have a minimum of 5 years experience coaching surfers, including demonstrated experience working with athletes competing at national or international level.Qualifications: AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma, or Diploma in Sport Science, Physical Education, Coaching, or equivalent; or demonstrated equivalent professional experience consistent with ANZSCO 452321 Skill Level 2 requirements.Performance analysis: Demonstrated experience using surf video analysis tools and sports performance assessment methodologies in a professional coaching context.Ocean safety & first aid: Must hold a current First Aid certificate (HLTAID011), CPR certificate (HLTAID009) and Blue Card, plus one of the following current ocean safety qualifications: OSSCA (Ocean Safety Surf Coach Award – APOLA), Surf Lifesaving Bronze Medallion, Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue), or ASI Surf Water Safety Rescue Award.DESIRABLEExperience in surfskate cross-training and mobility programming for surfersExperience working with international surf academies or national surf federationsExperience coaching surfers competing at WSL Challenger Series level or aboveHOW TO APPLY Send your CV, a cover letter addressing all essential requirements, and evidence of competitive surfing history (WSL competition results or equivalent) to.
