Teacher Assistant – Challenging Behaviours
Department of Education Victoria – Narre Warren VIC
Dandenong Valley SDS is a specialist school located in Narre Warren, Victoria.
We cater to students with moderate to severe intellectual disability who may also have physical impairments, medical needs, sensory needs and autism spectrum disorder.
The school was built in **** with a purpose-built BER building added in ****, and a new senior school and specialist teaching spaces built in ****.
Facilities include a PMP room, sensory garden, horticulture centre, bike track, fitness room, engine room, sensory room, generous-sized classrooms and play spaces.
All students participate in weekly water familiarisation, safety and swimming sessions in the hydrotherapy pool.
Students range in age from 5-18 years.
An Early Education Program caters to children from ******* years, with three-year-olds attending one day a week and four-year-olds attending two days a week.
In their last two years students participate in senior transition programmes designed to prepare them for post-school options and adult life.

Selection Criteria
A proven ability to work with disabled children in a positive and caring way.
A demonstrated record of contribution as a cohesive team member committed to an enthusiastic personal and professional contribution to a harmonious environment.
An ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals including community members, students, teachers, parents and other professionals.
A preparedness to work with students who exhibit challenging behaviours across all areas of the school.
Role
Attendance and duties are aligned with school policy and are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice and under supervision and direction.
The role may include coordination of other education support staff within the work area or educational programme.
Key responsibilities may involve:
Specific support tasks to achieve outcomes, such as ensuring data is properly maintained or co-ordinating a work area.
Assisting teachers by undertaking specific support tasks within an educational programme.
Supervised health and wellbeing support tasks, medical intervention support tasks, or other specialised student/teacher support roles requiring specific qualifications and/or training.
Technical tasks requiring basic knowledge of technical and/or scientific principles, such as routine support in libraries, science and information technology.
Responsibilities
Provides routine support for teachers, including assisting with planning of student routines.
Supports communication between teachers and parents.
Communicates with teachers on routine matters related to students.
Provides basic physical care and wellbeing support such as toileting, meals and lifting.
Communicates with students to support comprehension of basic tasks and information.
Addresses immediate behavioural presentations relating to specific students within a classroom setting aligned to school policy.
Provides basic support and supervision for individuals or groups of up to four students within a classroom setting.
Supports teachers in the coordination of educational programmes, including rostering and organising the work of a team of aides and liaising with external support services.
Provides medical intervention support to students, under specific conditions and with appropriate training and guidance.
Provides specialised communication support for students and teachers in areas such as AUSLAN and braille.
