Accountant – Financial Systems (FS0056)

Mackay Regional Council is seeking a solutions-focused, tech-savvy finance professional to provide high-level financial systems advice and support across Council. In this role, you'll work on assigned projects, assist end users to resolve system issues, and help improve reporting, processes and controls within our finance systems environment.
About the role
* Provide financial systems and related accounting support across Council, including assisting with maintenance, upgrades and enhancements of finance systems.
* Work on assigned projects to deliver improvements to system functionality, information quality and business processes.
* Assist end users by investigating issues, troubleshooting, and providing clear, timely resolutions and guidance.
* Analyse and interpret financial data to identify trends, risks and opportunities, and implement practical solutions.
* Design, build and improve financial reports and dashboards to support planning, budgeting, forecasting and statutory reporting.
* Contribute advice and input into internal controls, financial policies and procedures to support compliance and good governance.
* Support financial reporting requirements, including assisting with annual financial statements and responding to audit queries as required.
About you
To be successful, you will bring a strong analytical mindset, great communication skills and the ability to adapt in a changing, customer-focused environment. You're comfortable translating technical and accounting concepts into practical guidance for a range of stakeholders.
Essential
* Tertiary qualifications in Business, Finance, Commerce or Accounting (or equivalent) or currently studying towards.
* Demonstrated practical experience (minimum 3 years) in a similar role, including strong knowledge of accounting systems, computer concepts and programs.
* Well-developed skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and confidence working with corporate systems.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across a large organisation.
* Strong analytical approach to problem solving, initiative and attention to detail.
* Proven ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and deliver quality outcomes.
Desirable
* Experience with the TechnologyOne suite (including CI Anywhere) or similar integrated finance systems.
* Experience in project management, budgeting and project costing.
* Eligibility for membership of CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants ANZ.
* Understanding of local government accounting, relevant legislation and audit requirements.
