The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the Children's Criminal Law Practice, you'll deliver high-quality legal representation for children, young people, and their families, advocating for them across a broad range of criminal law matters. You'll work closely with dedicated colleagues and partner services to ensure each client receives the support they need, both legally and beyond. Each day, you will:
* Provide high-quality legal advice and representation for Aboriginal clients, with a focus on children and young people in criminal matters across multiple courts.
* Advocate in complex hearings, committals, District Court appeals, and instruct counsel for trials.
* Respect and support Aboriginal cultural practices while building strong, collaborative relationships with clients, communities, and colleagues.
* Mentor junior solicitors, support continuing legal education, and contribute to a coordinated, high-functioning legal team.
* Maintain professional case management, stay up-to-date with criminal law, and ensure compliance with ethical, WHS, and EEO standards.
* Engage with external stakeholders, develop inter-agency relationships, and contribute to law reform initiatives and community-focused advocacy.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a committed and capable legal professional who brings strong criminal law expertise and a deep respect for the cultural, social, and historical experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You pair technical excellence with compassion, sound judgment, and a genuine commitment to community, collaboration, and justice. Key strengths include:
* Legal qualifications with a NSW Practicing Certificate and minimum 5 years' criminal law experience, with a focus on children and young people.
* Deep knowledge of criminal law practice and procedure, combined with excellent written, oral, research, and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and provide high-quality legal advice to Aboriginal clients.
* Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with internal teams, non-legal supports, and external agencies.
* Commitment to cultural respect, ethical practice, workplace health & safety, and diversity in all aspects of work.
* Desirable: Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and willingness to travel across NSW for court and community work.
