SpaceX is seeking a highly skilled Toolmaker to join our team of elite engineers and technicians who are passionate about building the future of space travel. As a Toolmaker, you will play a critical role in the success of our Starship program by designing and fabricating the mechanical systems and tooling operations at our manufacturing and launch facilities.


Responsibilities

* Use advanced knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to interpret complex blueprints and ensure accurate assembly of large-scale structures.
* Creatively assemble and fabricate support equipment, ranging from custom shelving units to large machine structures, that meet the stringent requirements of our high-performance vehicles.
* Apply expertise in rigging and lifting heavy components using overhead cranes, gantries, mobile cranes, and other specialized equipment to achieve precise positioning and minimize risks.
* Maintain all components in optimal condition during assembly and disassembly, adhering to strict quality standards and ensuring maximum uptime for our production lines.
* Translate metrology data from inspection reports into actionable insights that inform final machined surfaces, driving precision and accuracy throughout the manufacturing process.
* Employ creative problem-solving skills to address unpredictable field issues, adapting designs and fabrication techniques as needed to meet evolving project requirements.
* Perform manual milling and turning operations as necessary to complete projects, utilizing a range of tools and techniques to deliver high-quality results.
* Develop innovative solutions using our fleet of field machining equipment, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in terms of precision and efficiency.
* Ensure all operations are conducted safely and in accordance with SpaceX's rigorous quality standards, minimizing risk and maximizing productivity.
* Maintain a well-organized workspace that optimizes collaboration and minimizes waste, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and growth.


Requirements

* High school diploma or equivalency certificate, supplemented by 1+ year of professional experience working in one or more of the following areas: Toolmaker, millwright, mechanic, boilermaker, machinist.


PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

* Experience with millwright operations and a strong understanding of GD&T principles.
* Knowledge of metrology, machining, welding technology, or tooling, with a focus on precision and accuracy.
* Completion of an accredited skilled trade apprenticeship program, demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
* Experience with weld fabrication and ability to pass a welding skills test for cutting, fitting, stick, TiG, and MiG on semi-exotic materials.
* Understanding of the manufacturing process for large structures from concept to completion, with a focus on efficiency and effectiveness.
* Ability to visualize 3-D space and integrate complex geometries on both large and small fabrications, ensuring seamless integration with existing systems.
* Ability to manually inspect components using conventional inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, and height gauges, driving precision and accuracy throughout the manufacturing process.
* Ability to apply GD&T principles with discretion relative to the assembly's function, ensuring accurate assembly and minimal rework.
* Ability to pass a machining skill test, demonstrating proficiency in a range of machining techniques.
* Ability to use and learn various software to observe, analyze, evaluate, and communicate pertinent information, staying ahead of the curve in terms of technology and innovation.
* Demonstrated leadership, dependability, and craftsmanship, with a strong work ethic and willingness to take ownership of projects.
* Ability to adapt to an extremely dynamic work environment while maintaining a positive attitude, embracing change and uncertainty with enthusiasm and resilience.
* Ability to find solutions to problems using critical thinking and drawing upon previous mechanical expertise, driving innovation and improvement throughout the organization.
* Ability to maintain the highest level of safety on the jobsite and bring new ideas for how to continue to work safely and effectively in new locations and changing environments.


Additional Requirements

* Willingness to work overtime and weekends based on the operational needs of the business, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
* Ability to work off-shift hours on a rotational or permanent basis, accommodating varying schedules and deadlines.
* Ability to lift 25 lbs unassisted, stoop, bend, crawl, walk, maneuver in tight spaces, and stand for extended periods, meeting physical demands of the role with ease and agility.
* Ability to work at elevated heights, navigating complex access routes and elevations with confidence and precision.
* Ability to work in outdoor environments - heat, cold, rain, and other challenging conditions, remaining focused and productive in a variety of settings.
