What's the role?
The Herald Sun is looking for a sharp, driven Crime Reporter to lead coverage of breaking incidents, public safety and the justice system across Victoria.
This is a fast-paced, high-impact role where no two days are the same. You'll be on the frontline of major stories from crime scenes and police operations to courts and investigations, while also digging deeper to uncover the "why" behind the headlines.
You'll bring urgency, accuracy and empathy to your reporting, helping us inform and engage our audience with stories that matter.
What you'll be doing
* Report on breaking news, including crime scenes, emergencies and police activity
* Build and maintain strong relationships with sources across law enforcement, legal and community networks
* Identify trends and develop deeper investigative or human-interest stories
* Cover court proceedings and provide clear, accurate reporting on legal matters
* Create engaging digital content, including video and social updates
* Report sensitively on complex and confronting issues
Who are you?
* 2+ years' experience in a newsroom (crime or courts experience preferred)
* Strong writing skills with the ability to work quickly under pressure
* Confident working across digital platforms and social media
* Solid understanding of the legal system and reporting constraints
* A proactive, resilient and curious mindset
* Flexible and available to work early mornings, late nights and weekends
* Driver's licence
