Paediatric training in Tasmania provides diverse specialty and sub-specialty experiences, working with a supportive and expanding team, and opportunities to explore the beautiful state of Lutruwita through work-life balance.
The program includes positions accredited for core General Paediatrics, rural General Paediatrics with a perinatal component, and rotations in Community Paediatric and Paediatric Rehabilitation Medicine for developmental/psychosocial training. ‘Stream’ positions guarantee a 3-year placement to complete all advanced training requirements. Additionally, accredited sub-specialty positions are available in Community Child Health, Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine, and Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine.
The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is the main paediatric and neonatal referral center and Tasmania's major university teaching hospital. It features a 32-bed paediatric and adolescent ward, a Neonatal and Paediatric ICU (NPICU), and a Special Care Nursery. Staffed 24/7 by registrars and residents, with in-house consultants during working hours and on call overnight, it offers extensive outpatient services.
Launceston General Hospital (LGH) includes a 34-bed General Paediatric ward, a neonatal nursery, and outpatient services, staffed 24/7 with consultant oversight during working hours and on call overnight. It is accredited for advanced training in General Paediatrics and related specialties.
The North-west Regional Hospital in Burnie features a 12-bed paediatric ward and an 8-bed neonatal ICU, with active outpatient clinics and 24/7 staffing.
Research and education are supported through links with the University of Tasmania and the Menzies Research Institute, including opportunities for research projects and contributions to departmental meetings and educational programs.
The program prioritizes trainee wellbeing, offering individualized training pathways, part-time and job-sharing options, mentorship, and active trainee networks.
Tasmania offers a broad range of experiences with excellent consultant support. The new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) provides competitive wages and paid education time, making Tasmania an attractive place to work.
