New South Wales Political Reporter
This is a key role in our news organisation, where you will be responsible for covering state politics and contributing to federal coverage.
As a New South Wales Political Reporter, you will provide accurate, timely and engaging coverage of NSW politics, with a national readership in mind. You will be based predominantly at NSW Parliament, ensuring the state's major political developments are covered with rigour and authority.
You will break exclusive stories and develop in-depth features that reveal the inner workings of government and the impact of policy across NSW communities. You will work closely with the bureau chief and collaborate with the Canberra bureau to contribute to federal coverage, where relevant to NSW.
You will also contribute to major state-based news stories in tandem with colleagues in the Sydney bureau. Your responsibilities will include filing clean, accurate copy to deadline, in accordance with legal and editorial standards. You will build and maintain a broad and trusted network of political, policy and community contacts.
You will ensure all content is published to a high digital standard, including story builds and audience engagement strategies. This is an opportunity to join Australia's most influential national newspaper and help shape the coverage of one of the country's most politically significant states.
We are seeking a journalist who combines a deep understanding of NSW politics with the ability to write with clarity, urgency and insight for a national masthead. You will have proven experience covering state or federal politics, or demonstrable knowledge of the state's political landscape and key players.
A strong record of breaking news and delivering exclusives at a national or major metropolitan outlet is essential. You will have established networks of contacts across politics, government, and the community sector. Solid digital journalism skills are required, as well as the ability to report on national and foreign affairs topics where they intersect with NSW politics and policy.
Strong editorial judgement and a willingness to lead the news agenda are necessary. Sound knowledge of defamation law, court reporting restrictions and media codes of practice is also essential. A flexible, can-do attitude with the capacity to work outside regular hours, including weekends, when the news cycle demands.
Benefits include access to publications and products from across the News Corp family. Health and wellbeing support is available, including advice, support and facilities for healthy minds and bodies. Time off options are provided to support personal needs and moments that matter in life. Development opportunities and recognition are also offered.
Giving back to the community is encouraged, with opportunities to make a difference. We value diversity and inclusion, and welcome applications from people of all ages, backgrounds, races, cultures, religions, sexual orientations, abilities and gender identities.
