The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Lead Backend Developer to join a major digital commerce and customer experience transformation program being delivered by a leading digital transformation consultancy. Our client is a prominent membership‐based organisation undertaking significant enterprise modernisation, with a strategic focus on establishing a next‐generation digital commerce ecosystem to support membership, learning, and future digital service offerings. This role will play a critical part in the delivery and evolution of a modern Commercetools platform, working within a composable architecture that integrates multiple enterprise systems and digital channels. You will be responsible for designing, building, and supporting Node.js‐based APIs, BFF (Backend for Frontend) services, and system integrations that power customer and member experiences. As a senior technical leader, you will remain hands‐on while also providing technical guidance and mentoring to other developers across project teams. Key Responsibilities
* Lead the backend development and integration of a large‐scale Commercetools implementation.
* Design, build, and maintain scalable Node.js and TypeScript APIs supporting a modern composable commerce architecture.
* Develop and support BFF (Backend for Frontend) services that power digital customer and member experiences.
* Build and maintain integrations between Commercetools and enterprise platforms including CRM, ERP, CMS, Identity, Learning Management, Analytics, and Payment systems.
* Design and implement RESTful APIs, microservices, and event‐driven services.
* Collaborate closely with Solution Architects, Technical Leads, UX teams, and business stakeholders to deliver high‐quality technical solutions.
* Contribute to architecture decisions, solution design, integration patterns, and technical roadmaps.
* Provide technical leadership across commerce and integration delivery streams.
* Mentor and support developers through code reviews, design discussions, technical coaching, and knowledge sharing.
* Assist project teams in resolving complex integration, performance, scalability, and technical challenges.
* Drive engineering best practices across code quality, testing, security, observability, and CI/CD.
* Support estimation, planning, governance, and delivery activities within an Agile environment.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Extensive experience as a Senior or Lead Backend Developer delivering enterprise‐scale digital solutions.
* Strong commercial experience building backend applications, APIs, and microservices using Node.js and TypeScript.
* Proven hands‐on experience implementing and integrating Commercetools within enterprise environments.
* Strong experience designing and developing BFF (Backend for Frontend) services.
* Deep understanding of composable commerce, MACH architecture, headless commerce, and API‐first development principles.
* Experience integrating commerce platforms with CRM, CMS, ERP, Identity, Payment, Analytics, and Learning Management platforms.
* Strong experience designing RESTful APIs and enterprise integration solutions.
* Experience working with Azure and cloud‐native application development.
* Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, automated testing, and modern software engineering principles.
* Demonstrated experience mentoring developers and providing technical leadership within delivery teams.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Experience working within consulting, systems integration, digital transformation, or enterprise delivery environments.
Desirable Skills
* Experience with Dynamics 365, Sitecore, MuleSoft, Okta, Next.js, and Vercel.
* Experience delivering digital commerce, membership, learning, or customer experience platforms.
* Knowledge of enterprise integration patterns and middleware technologies.
* Experience working within complex multi‐vendor environments.
* Commercetools certifications.
* Exposure to solution architecture and technical strategy initiatives.
