Seeking a detail-driven Financial Controller to lead finance operations, ensure compliance, and provide smooth financial systems for the Sydney Fringe
The Financial Controller is a critical operational role within the Finance Function of the Sydney Fringe. Reporting to the General Manager, this role ensures the accuracy, compliance, and efficiency of financial transactions and reporting. The Financial Controller works closely with the General Manager and wider team to deliver robust financial support and maintain smooth and transparent day-to-day financial and business operations across the organisation.
The Sydney Fringe Festival, established in 2010, is the largest independent arts festival in New South Wales, bringing together over 2,000 artists and 400+ performances across Greater Sydney. With a vibrant, diverse program and an economic impact of over $34 million, the festival has become a cornerstone of Sydney's cultural landscape.
The Sydney Fringe Inc. is seeking an experienced and organised, Financial Controller with excellent attention to detail to support the financial and business functions across the organisation. This key role ensures the successful delivery of our annual festival and year-round projects while supporting our ongoing growth.
Role Overview
The Finance Controller supports the General Manager with financial administration, reporting, compliance, and accounting processes. Working closely with the Festival team, this role ensures financial transactions are efficiently recorded and reconciled, statutory submissions are prepared on time, and internal reporting tools are well maintained. Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations
* Process all day-to-day financial transactions including accounts payable / receivable, payroll entries, reconciliations, and bank transactions.
* Maintain financial records using XERO and associated tools, ensuring accuracy and compliance with internal controls.
* Prepare regular internal financial reports and reconciliations for review by the General Manager.
* Assist the General Manager in budget tracking and grant acquittals.
* Prepare draft BAS, PAYG and superannuation summaries for submission.
* Assist with audit preparation by providing reconciliations and supporting documentation.
* Respond to financial data requests from department heads and support project-level tracking.
Financial Operations and Systems Support
* Ensure accurate data entry and integrity in financial and operational systems.
* Monitor and help improve internal processes under guidance from the General Manager.
* Support month-end close and financial year-end processes.
* Assist in the documentation of financial procedures to ensure continuity and compliance.
* Assist with the implementation of risk management strategies to safeguard the organisation's assets.
* Support the identification and mitigation of financial, and business risks.
* Provide advice and assistance to the General Manager to ensure organisational compliance with relevant regulatory frameworks, including Australian Accounting Standards (AASB), IFRS, and tax laws.
Key Skills and Knowledge
Technical Skills
* High level of accuracy and attention to detail in financial data management.
* Proficiency in XERO, Excel, and digital finance tools.
* Understanding of bookkeeping and accounting principles
* Familiarity with Australian financial compliance requirements (e.g., GST, superannuation, BAS).
Organisational Skills
* Excellent time management and ability to prioritise tasks across multiple projects.
* Ability to work independently while maintaining strong communication with the General Manager.
* Interpersonal Skills
* Collaborative and professional approach in working with cross-functional and high performing teams.
* Discreet and trustworthy in handling confidential financial data.
* Commitment to continues learning and process improvement.
Qualifications and Experience
* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related business discipline.
* CPA or CA qualifications are preferred
* 5+ years in a financial operations or accounting support role
* Experience in the not-for-profit and / or arts sector is desirable.
Reporting Relationships
* Reports directly to the General Manager
* Collaborates closely with the Sydney Fringe management team and staff.
