About the Role The Economic Advisor – Regulatory Affairs provides expert, trusted, and strategic economic and regulatory advice to support Telstra’s commercial and policy objectives. This role is pivotal in developing and implementing regulatory strategies, conducting economic analysis, and representing the company’s interests with regulators, government, and industry bodies. The role focuses on economic advocacy, competition analysis, and regulatory submissions. Develop and implement regulatory strategies to manage risks and maximize commercial interests, integrating with broader business strategy. Conduct economic and financial modelling, competition analysis, and policy impact assessments. Draft and review regulatory submissions, including responses to government inquiries (e.g., Productivity Commission, ACCC). Represent Telstra in external consultations with regulators (ACCC, ACMA, OAIC, Treasury, etc.) and government departments. Build and maintain constructive relationships with regulatory authorities and industry stakeholders. Provide advice to support compliance with the Competition and Consumer Act, Telecommunications Act, and related legislation. Support incident management, regulatory investigations, and enforcement actions as required. Collaborate with legal, policy, and commercial teams to ensure alignment and effective risk management. Contribute to the development of industry self-regulatory instruments and codes. Lead major submissions to government inquiries and market reviews, focusing on digital economy, productivity, and competition. Provide operational support during regulatory investigations and inquiries. Ensure cohesive and strategic responses to regulatory challenges through cross-functional collaboration. About You You will bring these skills and experiences to successful in the role: Tertiary qualification in economics, law, or a related discipline. Advanced expertise in economic and financial modelling, regulatory economics, and policy analysis – with a demonstrated ability to translate this into practical and commercially astute advice and advocacy in a market environment. Strong business acumen and analytical skills. Strong understanding of the interaction between competition law, telecommunications policy, and regulatory frameworks. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to advocate for Telstra’s position in submissions and external forums. Ability to translate economic and regulatory advice to pragmatic outcomes. Ability to quickly identify issues, assess cross-business impacts, and develop effective strategies. Experience engaging with regulators, government, and industry bodies. Project management and stakeholder engagement skills. Proven ability to lead regulatory submissions and represent organizational interests in high-profile consultations. Experience providing operational support during regulatory investigations and inquiries. Demonstrated capability to collaborate effectively with legal, policy, and commercial teams.
