* Full time ongoing role available*
* Work from Broken Hill, Walgett, Armidale, Dubbo or Lightning Ridge (other DPIRD office locations may also be considered).
* Earn between $78K and $145K per annum plus super, based on your skills, experience, and knowledge.

About the Role:
As a Mine Safety Officer, you will play a crucial role in improving health and safety performance within the NSW opal mining industry.

You will be responsible for verifying that effective risk management and incident prevention strategies are implemented through site inspections, assessments, and investigations. Your work will ensure that opal mine operations comply with health and safety legislation, ultimately contributing to a safer working environment for all.

Your other responsibilities will include:

* Implementing effective risk management and incident prevention strategies through site inspections, assessments, and investigations.
* Conducting both announced and unannounced inspections, including weekends and back shifts, and providing written compliance status reports to mine operators.
* Consulting with mine operators to address corrective actions and schedule improvement measures.
* Investigating incidents and complaints to determine causes and recommend preventive measures, including outside of normal business hours.

What We're Looking For:
This is a role that requires resilience, adaptability, and strong interpersonal skills.

You'll need to be someone who can:

* Undertake regular travel, including overnight stays, responding to incidents and emergency situations as they arise.
* Build and maintain relationships with mine operators and workers, gaining their confidence through cooperative and open relationships.
* Negotiate with and influence mine operators who may have limited understanding of their legal obligations.
* Work within complex, high-pressure environments where you must analyse complex situations and navigate various stakeholders' interests and concerns.

You'll also need:

* Knowledge of, or an ability to learn and apply legislative frameworks as they apply to mining and/or work health and safety.
* Knowledge or an ability to efficiently obtain an understanding of mining systems and practices.
* Experience with auditing methodologies and/or undertaking investigations would be beneficial

Essential Requirements:

* A current Class C driver licence.
* Participation in ongoing health screening and pre-employment probity screening.
* Willingness to undertake required travel
