Associate Data Analyst

SNSW Grade: 5/6 - base salary from $90,767 to $103,729 + super
Employment Type: Temp, Full-time until September 2027
Location: Parramatta / Haymarket. In office presence required as per DCS directive
About the team
The Digital Data & Analytics team empowers Service NSW Digital product teams with the insights they need to improve the services millions of residents rely on. We transform raw data into stories, trends and recommendations that guide smarter decisions and better customer outcomes.
Our team culture is collaborative, curious and mission‐driven. We work closely with product managers, designers and digital delivery teams, making this an ideal environment for someone who enjoys connecting with people, solving real‐world problems, and turning complex information into meaningful change.
Your day-to-day
As our Associate Data Analyst, you are the engine behind data‐driven decision making. Your work helps teams understand what's happening, why it matters, and where opportunities lie. You'll collaborate directly with digital product teams to unpack their questions, translate them into analytical tasks, and deliver insights they can act on immediately.
This role is perfect for someone early in their analytics career who is motivated, proactive, and eager to learn in a supportive environment.
What You'll Do
•Explore and analyse data using established quantitative techniques (e.g., summary statistics, bar/line plots, frequency tables).
•Build clear and compelling data visualisations and dashboards using tools like Power BI, Tableau or Looker.
•Deliver actionable insights that help product teams make decisions and improve service outcomes.
•Translate requests into meaningful analysis by understanding the real problem behind the question.
•Present findings in simple, visual and engaging ways.
•Collaborate closely with product managers, designers and project teams to identify opportunities and guide decision‐making.

What Makes This Role Unique
Unlike many analytics roles, this position is highly collaborative and customer‐focused. You'll speak regularly with stakeholders, understand their challenges, and co‐design solutions.

Rather than chasing the latest data science techniques, our focus is on usefulness, clarity and impact. You'll thrive here if you enjoy making insights meaningful, not just technically impressive.

About You

You're someone who:
•Can design and build clear, effective data visualisations.
•Has strong conceptual business understanding and cares about the "why," not just the "what."
•Learns quickly and shows persistence (tenacity!) in delivering something genuinely valuable.
•Is curious, proactive, team‐oriented and comfortable communicating with people.
•Doesn't need to know every tool now but can show the capacity to learn.
Technical foundations we look for (or the ability to learn):
-Microsoft Excel
-Basic SQL
-Basic Python or R (advantage, not essential)
-At least one data visualisation tool (Power BI, Tableau, Looker)
•Exposure to cloud data warehouses such as AWS Redshift, BigQuery or Databricks is beneficial but not required.

Essential requirements
To be considered for roles in the NSW public sector, applicants must:
•Be NSW residents or willing to relocate .
•Hold appropriate working rights for the type of employment offered:
-Ongoing (permanent) roles require Australian citizenship or permanent residency .
-Temporary roles require valid work rights for the full duration of the role .
More information is available in the PSC Essential Requirements Factsheet..

Why Join Us?
•Work that has real impact for people across NSW
•A supportive team invested in your development
•Hybrid, flexible working with no after‐hours expectations
•Opportunities to develop strong technical, analytical and stakeholder‐engagement skills
•A unique chance to grow your career in a purpose‐driven digital organisation
