Disability Support Worker

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Disability Support Worker plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by providing comprehensive, person-centered support. The primary objective is to empower clients to achieve their goals, foster independence, and promote inclusion within the community.

MAIN TASKS:

- Develop and implement personalised support plans in consultation with clients, families, and relevant stakeholders.
- Assist clients with daily living activities, including personal care, meal preparation, and household tasks.
- Facilitate and coordinate community engagement and social inclusion opportunities for clients.
- Monitor and document client progress, maintaining accurate and timely record-keeping.
- Provide emotional and behavioral support to address the unique needs and challenges of each individual.
- Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to assess and address clients' holistic needs.
- Support clients in accessing educational, vocational, and recreational opportunities.
- Advocate for clients' rights, ensuring their voices are heard and respected in decision-making processes.
- Respond appropriately to crisis situations, following established protocols and ensuring the safety of clients.
- Foster a safe and supportive environment that promotes dignity, respect, and autonomy.

OTHER DUTIES:

- Actively participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with best practices.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of support services through regular feedback, evaluation, and suggestions.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, organised, and safe living environment for clients.

REQUIRED QUALITIES:

- Demonstrated empathy and compassion towards individuals with diverse abilities and backgrounds.
- Patience, adaptability, and flexibility in responding to diverse needs and challenging situations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to build positive relationships.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team setting.
- Commitment to upholding ethical standards, maintaining confidentiality, and respecting privacy.

DESIRED COMPETENCIES:

- In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and standards within the disability support sector.
- Familiarity with assistive technologies, adaptive equipment, and other aids.
- Cultural competence, sensitivity to diversity, and the ability to work with clients from various cultural backgrounds.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and addressing challenges.
- Ability to adapt to changing environments, client needs, and organisational priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- A Certificate III or IV in Disability Support or a related field is required.
- Essential requirements of the role:
- National Criminal History check or NDIS Worker Check
- Working With Children Check
- Valid Driver’s Licence
- Suitable vehicle with comprehensive insurance
- First Aid Certificate
- Two professional references
- Right to work in Australia
- Covid-19 Vaccination
- Smart phone

EXPERIENCE:

- Previous experience in a similar role is highly desirable.
- Experience supporting People with Disability.
- Demonstrated Continuing Professional Development.
- Knowledge of continuous quality improvement principles

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

- Proficiency in providing personal care and support services.
- Strong organisational and time management skills to effectively prioritise tasks.
- Competent in using relevant technology for documentation, communication, and reporting.
- Effective collaboration and teamwork skills.
