Gardener/Support Work
I am seeking someone to support my brother at our family home located in Herron WA.
Dale has a mild intellectual disability and struggles with some social interactions but has worked in a supported employement service at a nursery for 10 years. Since moving to Herron he has taken a interest in our small vegetable garden. 2/3 enclosed garden beds, small orchard and chicken space, seed tray and fenced area.
We would love to find someone with gardening/nursey/horticulture experience; perhaps transitioning to retirement or looking for causual work that would come to out property 1 -2 times a week for a couple of hours to help Dale in organising/growing/structuring and caring for his garden. The role is not to overhaul the garden but is specificailly targeting at doing this WITH Dale, to provide the companionship, interaction and training for him to be able to care for the garden in his own time as well.
There is quite a lot of freedom in this and can look like; working in the garden, weeding, showing dale how to build trellises for tomatoes, seeding, setting up companion planting, setting up planting schedule, composting, driving to nurseries to buy new plants, harvesting veggies, designing and explanding new areas of the garden. Your own initiative and work ethic will be required to fill the time and make the work productive while also connecting with Dale.
Support work expereince is great but not essential, Dale knows how to crack a joke and work under direction so we are really looking with someone with a friendly manner, and their own intitiative, a love for being outside and solid knowledge of gardening and/or horticulture.
Most tools/equipment can be found on the farm any else needed to support the garden can be supplied within reason. Hours and pay negotiable, if this is something that might interest you please send your CV, or reach out with a general introduction and how this arrangement might work for you.
