The Maintenance / Grounds Person is responsible for ensuring the school’s buildings, grounds, and facilities are safe, clean, functional, and welcoming for students, staff, and the wider school community. The role requires a proactive, hands-on approach to maintenance, gardening, repairs, and general upkeep, with an ability to prioritise tasks and respond flexibly to school needs.
Employment Type
Part-time – 5 days per week, 5 hours per day (25 hours per week). The hours of work would be from 7:00 - 11:00 AM daily although this schedule is negotiable.
Key Responsibilities
Grounds and Outdoor Maintenance
- Maintain school gardens, trees, and outdoor play areas, including mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, weeding, and mulching.
- Ensure pathways, carparks, and playgrounds are safe and well maintained.
- Oversee irrigation systems and watering schedules as required.
- Assist with playground and sports area maintenance, including inspections for safety.
Building and Facilities Maintenance
- Undertake routine repairs and maintenance (e.g., minor carpentry, painting, plumbing, lighting, fixtures, and fittings).
- Liaise with external contractors for specialised work when required, ensuring safety and compliance.
- Conduct daily checks of facilities to identify and address hazards, damage, or safety issues.
- Assist with preparation and set-up of school events and activities.
Safety and Compliance
- Support the Business Manager and Principal in maintaining Occupational Health & Safety standards across the school.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance tasks and report hazards promptly.
- Ensure compliance with Department of Education and VSBA requirements regarding maintenance and safety.
General Support
- Move furniture and equipment as required.
- Assist with deliveries and storage.
- Provide general support to staff for maintenance-related requests.
- Promote pride in the school environment through attention to detail and high standards of presentation.
Key Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated experience in building, grounds, and/or property maintenance.
- Skills in basic trades such as carpentry, gardening, painting, or plumbing.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks.
- Understanding of and commitment to occupational health and safety standards.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy school environment.
- Valuable interpersonal and communication skills when engaging with staff, students, contractors, and parents.
Additional Requirements
- A current Working with Children Check (Employee).
- A satisfactory National Police Check.
- Physical capacity to undertake manual work and operate grounds/maintenance equipment safely.
