Job Description
The Senior Legal Counsel is a legal position that provides specialist legal advice to the government. The role is part of the Legal and Governance Team. The role's key responsibilities include:
* Providing high-level, timely strategic legal advice on complex issues arising under the OPGGS Act and Regulations, administrative law, freedom of information, regulatory enforcement and various other legal matters affecting Commonwealth organisations;
* Preparing and reviewing complex legal documents, including submissions, administrative decisions and statements of reasons, affidavits and search warrants etc;
* Providing input into the review and implementation of amending legislation as required;
* Communicating and negotiating with internal and external stakeholders productively and effectively, maintaining relationships of trusts;
* Complying with business policies and processes, including financial, communication, information and human resources practices, and the Australian Public Service Values, Code of Conduct and Employment Principles.
Selection criteria Essential
* 1. Demonstrated high level experience in litigation and providing legal advice on the interpretation and implementation of complex legislation, preferably on administrative law with experience with freedom of information.
* 2. A tertiary qualification in law, admission to practice as an Australian Legal Practitioner and the holder of, or eligibility to hold, a current practising certificate.
* 3. A minimum of five to eight years of post-admission legal experience.
* 4. Highly developed research, conceptual and analytical skills.
* 5. Highly developed interpersonal, communication, negotiation and influencing skills, including the ability to advise government agencies and stakeholders on key legal issues.
* 6. Demonstrated ability to cultivate productive working relationships with colleagues and external networks.
Desirable
* 1. Experience working in a public sector, regulatory and/or offshore energy or renewables environment.
The Successful Applicant
A successful Senior Legal Counsel should have:
* A recognised legal qualification and admission to practice law in Australia.
* Proven experience in delivering high-quality legal advice in the public sector or a similar environment.
* Strong knowledge of legislation and regulatory frameworks relevant to the public sector.
* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
* The ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under tight deadlines.
* A proactive approach to identifying and mitigating legal risks.
