The Embedded Systems Engineering Manager at MST Global leads the Australian-based embedded systems team responsible for developing and maintaining firmware across the company's advanced digital mining and tunnelling technologies. This senior role combines technical leadership and strategic oversight, driving the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of robust embedded software solutions that power MST's hardware products used in harsh industrial environments. The position requires collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, ensuring product quality, efficiency, and innovation while mentoring engineers, managing resources, and maintaining alignment with business objectives and customer needs.
In this role the Embedded Systems Engineering Manager is responsible for -
Safety
* Ensure a culture and practice of safety compliance on all sites and offices.
* Take a lead role in the promotion and management of safety, including participation in the monitoring of site safety; ensure completion of safety audits and a proactive approach to rectification.
* Maintain a clean, safe, and unobstructed work area, practicing good safety habits, and utilise appropriate safety equipment.
* Understand OH & S responsibilities; observe and report any potentially unsafe or unhealthy work conditions.
Prioritisation
* Defining task scopes to ensure effective work breakdown and efficient concurrent engineering.
* Contribute to the planning and achievement of business objectives, goals and priorities, through the application of extensive software systems knowledge, expertise and experience.
* Monitor team progress and intervene as appropriate to ensure effective outcomes.
* Efficient application of team resources to meet organisational goals.
Execution
* Coach, supervise and monitor the performance of direct reports, including the provision of leadership and direction to ensure transfer of knowledge on products, industry and clientele, and professional development opportunities.
* Task team members with work packages and monitor progress against deliverables.
* Drive completion of deliverables to quality standards and in accordance with agreed timing.
* Anticipate resource needs and plan for support of concurrent development activities and system-wide integration activities.
* Assess design options and ensure balance is achieved between risk, implementation time, reusability, testability and maintenance.
* Understand how the MST Global hardware & software products are used in field conditions and utilise this knowledge in feature creation and implementation.
* Identify and mitigate risks.
* Minimise rework.
Enhance Capability
* Contribute to the definition, architecture, development and deployment of MST Global hardware and embedded products. If needed, perform related evaluation of products and technologies.
* Provide technology expertise in a variety of areas, contribute to technical decision making process.
* Seek, use and promote best practice methodologies & tools (including reusing existing open source and third party software modules where possible) to deliver software to the required standards and to maximise speed of development.
* Participate actively in measuring and communicating your performance against organisational and individual goals throughout the year, and as part of the performance management process.
* Identify areas for improvement in direct reports and action appropriately.
Communication and Teamwork
* Manage expectations.
* Support the overall business and strategic objectives of MST Global.
* Collaborate with other team leads to establish a common and effective systems engineering approach to product development.
* Work collaboratively within the development team to raise and maintain a high level of technical proficiency.
* Mentoring teams on proper application of technologies.
* Ensure the development team adheres to the adopted architectural standards and guidelines.
Software Development Process
* Contribute to continuous improvement of the software development process within the development team and overall MST Global Innovation process.
* Identify areas for improvement in the firmware and embedded development process and action appropriately.
Technical Expertise:
* Strong proficiency in real-time operating systems (RTOS) and microcontroller-based development.
* Experience developing embedded software integrated with complex digital hardware products.
* Knowledge of Linux platforms, networking, and open-source frameworks.
* Familiarity with wired communication interfaces and protocols such as RS232, RS485, CAN, and J1939.
* Understanding of wireless technologies including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and UWB.
* Competent in Agile/Scrum software development practices and tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence).
* Desirable knowledge of IoT systems, VoIP technologies, codecs, and software-defined radios.
* Understanding of DevOps concepts, CI/CD, and modern embedded development workflows.
Leadership and Management:
* Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate engineering teams.
* Skilled in resource planning, project prioritisation, and performance management.
* Ability to balance competing demands, technical risks, and delivery timelines.
