This includes sensor integration, embedded control, power systems, field testing, and quality assurance.
You will work across the full stack—from bare metal to browser—and drive continuous improvement in system robustness and uptime.This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who thrives on ownership, iteration, and building technologies that operate outdoors in dirty, hot, unpredictable conditions—and keep working.Key Responsibilities System Integration Leadership : Own the integration of electrical, mechanical, and software subsystems into a reliable end-to-end field unit.Reliability Engineering : Define and implement testing protocols, fault-tolerant architecture, and data-driven diagnostics for long-term system durability.Control and Software Systems : Lead the development of robust backend, frontend, and embedded software, managing control loops, sensor inputs, and telemetry.Field Validation : Design and oversee structured experiments and test plans to validate system performance in real agricultural environments.Team Enablement : Mentor interns and junior engineers, guide code reviews and prototyping processes, and elevate engineering standards.Documentation & Specifications : Maintain detailed design records, system diagrams, interface specs, and engineering BOMs to support scale-up and manufacturing.Work with supplies and design houses: as the prototype becomes a product we will leverage industry expertise (machinery fabricators, DFM experts etc).
This role will require direct management of external partners.
This may involve local and international travel.Requirements Experience & QualificationsBachelor's degree (honours) or higher in Mechatronic, Electrical, or Systems Engineering.3+ years in hardware systems integration, preferably in field robotics, ag-tech, mining, or automotive.Strong understanding of electromechanical systems, sensors, embedded control, and system-level testing.Technical SkillsControl & Software : Experience with Linux, Python, Docker, JavaScript, HTML; confident in Raspberry Pi and microcontroller deployments(STM32)Electrical : Proficient in wiring, debugging circuits, designing schematics; PCB experience a plus.
We have experts here - so basic understanding is ok.Mechanical/CAD : Confident in Fusion or SolidWorks; familiar with rapid prototyping and iterative design.Toolchain : Git (branches/PRs), VSCode, CI pipelines, Balena or similar for device orchestration.Professional TraitsProven ability to design for reliability under real-world constraints.Experience in cross-functional team environments with rapid prototyping and iterative testing.Strong documentation, communication, and leadership skills.Must be ok with field work (hot/cold): 1-2 days per week.
We organise transport etc.Must be willing to work hard, take ownership and be a crucial part of a world first technology.Location Onsite 5 days per week.
