The Opportunity
Help shape the future of Lake Illawarra. Join us in making a difference by driving awareness and community engagement around one of our region's most treasured natural assets.
As the Environment Communications Officer, you'll lead storytelling and strategic messaging for the Lake Illawarra Coastal Management Program (CMP). Your work will highlight the importance of preserving the lake's natural values and preparing our communities for climate change.
You'll collaborate with teams across Council to deliver engaging campaigns and content that inspire action and build public connection to Lake Illawarra. From biodiversity and water quality to coastal hazards and restoration, your communications will empower the community to be part of the solution.
This is a part-time Fixed Term Contract position until August 2028, working14 hours per week, based in our office with flexibility scheduling available Monday to Friday. The position is grant funded, hourly rate from $51.98 to $59.99 (salary is based on skills, experience, and qualifications).
How you'll make a difference
* Develop and deliver targeted communications plans aligned with Council's environmental priorities.
* Create compelling content for web, social media, and print that brings the CMP to life.
* Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to drive community participation.
* Support media relations and contribute to Council's broader communications efforts.
* Analyse engagement data and prepare reports to inform strategy and decision-making.
About you
You're a natural communicator with a passion for the environment and a talent for turning complex ideas into compelling stories. You bring:
* Solid experience and/or a relevant degree in communications, engagement, or environmental storytelling.
* Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft clear, engaging messages that resonate with diverse audiences.
* Digital content creation expertise, including photography and video production, to bring environmental initiatives to life.
* Strong interpersonal skills, enabling you to collaborate effectively across teams and build meaningful relationships.
* Strategic thinking and project management abilities, allowing you to juggle multiple priorities and deliver impactful campaigns.
* A current driver's licenceand a sound understanding of WHS principles to support safe and effective fieldwork and engagement.
