About the role
Are you passionate about sustainable transport and strategic planning? The Public Transport Authority (PTA) is seeking a driven and forward-thinking Railway Operations Planner to help shape the long-term operational vision for Perth's passenger rail network. In this pivotal role, your work will directly support the efficiency, sustainability, and future capacity of our growing rail system. Collaborating closely with internal teams and key stakeholders, you will help develop strategies that ensure operational excellence is embedded in every stage of planning and decision-making.
Step into a technically rewarding position where your skills in data analysis and simulation modelling will thrive. You'll build detailed network models — including track layouts, signalling systems, rolling stock, and timetables — using industry-leading software. Your modelling insights will guide critical infrastructure and service planning decisions, helping to optimise everything from depot utilisation to fleet allocation.
Your analytical mindset, combined with a background in transport, planning, or operations — and a solid understanding of how rail systems interact and function — will be key to your success. Equally important are your communication and stakeholder engagement skills, enabling you to collaborate across teams and influence outcomes with clarity and confidence. If you're motivated by problem-solving, strategic thinking, and making a real-world impact, this is your opportunity to help shape a smarter, more connected public transport system for generations to come. Step aboard — and help us engineer the future.
About You
To excel in this role, you should possess:
* Demonstrated understanding of planning and design in relation to long term planning in a public transport or similar industry.
* Demonstrated understanding of rail network operations and the interdependencies between key railway infrastructure and systems as applicable to operations planning, e.g. track, signalling and overhead power.
* Experience in computer modelling and quantitative analysis using contemporary computer software relevant to transport operations planning, preferably rail network simulation modelling using appropriate specialist software.
* Well-developed communication skills (verbal and interpersonal) including the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of parties including key internal and external stakeholders, consultants and contractors.
* Highly developed conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills.
