Job Title: Archivist Manager
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Archivist Manager to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing an extensive collection of historical records, photographs, oral histories, ephemera and artefacts.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and maintain best practice archival collection management policies.
* Catalogue and maintain archival materials in line with these policies.
* Contribute to the development of books, exhibitions, websites and social media to tell the story of the Royal Australian Navy.
* Provide assistance to researchers and other stakeholders within government and the wider public.
* Assess, sentence, and dispose of records in line with legislative and policy requirements.
* Ensure the archive maintains currency with relation to key Navy records.
* Conduct and arrange conservation and digitisation in line with priorities.
* Manage staff and volunteers who assist with the archive's functions.
About the Role:
This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic team that supports the Sea Power Centre's remit to enhance the understanding of maritime power. You will be working closely with a small team to develop and implement collection management policies and procedures for paper-based, photographic and sound collections held in Canberra.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
* Experience in cataloguing and/or managing archival records or heritage collections, preferably within defence, military history or military heritage environment.
* Familiarity with different historical materials that could be of use to researchers, and experience in promoting their use and making them available to answer enquiries.
* Well-developed skills dealing with public requests for information and the ability to conduct historical research and write the necessary response to the enquiry.
* Well-developed oral and written communication skills, and experience in dealing with stakeholders.
* A developed ability to work independently including strong time management and the ability to handle competing priorities.
* A strong team work ethic that supports others to meet team goals and the ability to mentor others to develop their historical abilities and networks.
