Australian National Fabrication Facility- Queensland (ANFF-Qld) based at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN)Full-time (100%), fixed-term position through to 30 June 2028, with possibility of extensionBase salary will be in the range $113,377.67 - $127,112.24 + 17% Superannuation (HEW Level 8)Based at our vibrant St Lucia CampusAbout This OpportunityThe ANFF-Qld Facility is seeking to appoint a Senior Process Development Engineer (Microfluidics and micro and nano devices Fabrication) to support researchers in utilising ANFF’s advanced micro- and nanofabrication capabilities. Reporting to the ANFF-Qld Facility Manager, you will primarily focus on providing technical solutions and support, including microfluidic device fabrication, bio -micro/nano interface device fabrication, and related process development and optimisation, as well as delivering user training within the relevant areas of the facility.Key responsibilities will include:Lead Process Ownership- Take primary responsibility and technical ownership in microfluidic system and bio- micro/nano interface devices fabrication and application, providing end-to-end technical support from design, fabrication, system setup to support academic and industry research across diverse applications.Process Innovation and Continuous Improvement- Lead or contribute to process development initiatives by evaluating current methodologies, identifying inefficiencies, and implementing innovative solutions to enhance performance optimisation.User Training and Technical Mentorship- Design and deliver hands-on training sessions to researchers on photolithography and associated fabrication tools, ensuring safe, effective, and independent usage.Cross-functional Collaboration- Collaborate with internal teams, academic and industry researchers, other ANFF nodes, and industry stakeholders to support multidisciplinary projects and share technical knowledge and expertise.Cleanroom Operations and Safety Compliance- Oversee cleanroom operations, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, contamination control, and efficient facility management.Technical Support and Tool Maintenance -Perform preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting for key nanofabrication tools, coordinating with vendors and technical staff as needed to ensure minimal downtime.About the Australian National Fabrication Facility (ANFF-Qld)ANFF-Qld is a not-for-profit research infrastructure facility established under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS). ANFF is a network of eight nodes distributed across Australia, supported by over $200 million in investment in equipment, infrastructure, and personnel.The Queensland Node (ANFF-Qld) is a state-of-the-art fabrication facility specialising in microfluidics, organic electronics and optoelectronics, biomaterials, novel semiconductor materials, and characterisation. Its facilities are located within the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) and the Centre for Organic Photonics & Electronics (COPE) at The University of Queensland, as well as the Queensland Microtechnology Facility (QMF) at Griffith University. By supporting the academic endeavour across teaching, research, and the student life, you will have the opportunity to contribute to activities that have a lasting impact on our community.Join a community where excellence is at the core of our culture, contributions are valued and a range of benefits and rewards are available, such as:Up to 26 weeks paid parental leave or 14 weeks paid primary caregiver leave17% superannuation contributions17.5% annual leave loadingAccess to flexible working arrangements including flexible start/finish times, purchased leave, and a condensed fortnightHealth and wellness discounts – fitness passport access, free yearly flu vaccinations, discounted health insurance, and access to our Employee Assistance Program for staff and their immediate familyUQ Study for StaffOn campus childcare optionsAffordable parking (from just $6.15 a day)Salary packaging optionsAbout YouCompletion of postgraduate qualifications in Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Medical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with subsequent extensive experience in microfluidic and nanofabrication processes, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, experience, and/or training.Demonstrated Expert Knowledge in the Following Areas:Micro- and nano-device fabrication and characterisation, with an emphasis on microfluidic devices.Photolithography and soft lithography techniques, including hands-on experience with materials such as SU-8, Dry Film, and PDMS.Design and fabrication of microfluidic systems, incorporating a deep understanding of fluid dynamics, system integration, and material compatibility.Advanced device fabrication processes and techniques, including photolithography, etching, thin film deposition, wafer bonding, and nano 3D printing.Cleanroom operations and contamination control in ISO-class environments.Demonstrated strong capability in 2D and 3D device/component design using tools such as LEDIT, Mentor Graphics, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or equivalent, applied in device prototyping and development.Proven ability to deliver hands-on training to users on cleanroom protocols and fabrication tools (e.g., photolithography, soft lithography), and to mentor junior staff or researchers in the safe, effective, and independent use of equipment.Experience in a service-related scientific role within a research infrastructure facility, providing user support and technical consultation to academic and industry researchers across multidisciplinary projects.Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders including internal university clients, national collaborators, and industry partners.Demonstrated commitment to research integrity, ethics, and compliance with workplace health and safety standards, particularly in high-compliance cleanroom environments.The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, mandatory immunisations etc.You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply.
