The Team
The Tasmanian FMHS provides comprehensive statewide forensic mental health services across secure forensic inpatient, community, correctional, and criminal justice settings. This consultant psychiatrist opportunity is based in our Northern Community Forensic Mental Health Service, providing specialist forensic psychiatric care to the beautiful North and North‑Western Tasmania. The position is based primarily within our dedicated MDT in Launceston, named in the Top 10 list of places to visit in 2025 by Lonely Planet.
The Role
The successful candidate will perform the functions of consultant psychiatrist within the Northern Community Forensic Mental Health Service.
Qualifications and Skills
* Extensive experience and skills in adult general psychiatry in a range of practice settings.
* Training and/or experience in forensic (particularly correctional or criminal) psychiatry.
* Demonstrated high level of verbal and written communication skills, and demonstrated experience and skill in liaison, particularly with GP's.
* Experience in the area of clinical leadership and demonstrated ability to deal effectively with interpersonal issues.
* Demonstrated ability to convey psychiatric knowledge effectively to fellow staff, service providers and patients.

Appointment Details
Fixed term full time day worker (with on‑call) position, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing April 2026 until 03 November 2028.
Hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time and casual vacancies.
Position Features
* Some Interstate and Intrastate travel may be required.
* This position involves regular on‑call work which is divided equally between the medical workforce including the Statewide Specialty Director.
* Staff employed against this Statement of Duties as a Visiting Medical Practitioner will be employed in accordance with the Tasmanian Visiting Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Agreement and remunerated accordingly.
Salary and Allowances
$210,000 - $301,349 per annum, pro‑rate + 12% superannuation.
Salary range is in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022.
Additional allowances (calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available):
* Provision of a motor vehicle allowance of $28,389 per annum, pro rate.
* Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 per annum, pro rate.
* Relocation and commencement support available up to $15,000 for approved appointees.
* Allowance in lieu of participating in private practice scheme 35% of base salary (if applicable).
* Other allowances as applicable.

Eligibility
* Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.
* Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee's responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.
