Balaclava State School is a Prep to Year 6 primary school located in the centre of Cairns. Our students are drawn primarily from the surrounding residential suburbs of the local area. The successful candidate will play a key role in implementing and embedding Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), trauma‑informed practices, and social‑emotional learning programmes. A strong commitment to supporting cultural diversity and ensuring equitable outcomes for all students, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, is essential.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school's Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) framework to promote a positive and consistent school culture.
* Champion trauma‑informed practices to support students with complex needs, ensuring staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively.
* Develop and oversee social‑emotional learning programmes that enhance student wellbeing, resilience, and engagement.
* Promote and celebrate cultural diversity, fostering an inclusive school community that values and respects all backgrounds.
* Collaborate with teachers, support staff, parents, and external agencies to provide targeted interventions and support for students with diverse needs.
* Lead and manage a team of student support staff, ensuring professional development and capacity building to deliver high‑quality services.
* Monitor and analyse student wellbeing and behaviour data to inform decision‑making and continuous improvement.
* Contribute to the school's leadership team, supporting the development and implementation of the school's strategic priorities.
To Be Successful In This Role, You Will
* Demonstrate expertise in Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and its application in a primary school setting.
* Have a strong understanding of trauma‑informed practices and their role in supporting student wellbeing.
* Be passionate about promoting cultural diversity and inclusive practices within the school community.
* Have experience in designing and implementing social‑emotional learning programmes that support student development.
* Possess excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, families, and external stakeholders.
* Be skilled in data analysis and using evidence‑based practices to inform decision‑making and improve student outcomes.
