**The Position**
This is a key role in a friendly, inclusive research group that is focused on understanding the social dynamics, cognition and culture of wild birds. We do this with a combination of wild and captive work, with a focus on large-scale experiments using automated tracking and custom-built apparatus. The lab group is located at the Australian National University and the University of Zurich, however this position will be based at the Australian National University.
With no two days being the same, this role is integral to support the research group in delivering high quality research. This is primarily directed towards two newly started research grants, the first aimed at understanding socio-cognitive responses to human impact in urban-living sulphur-crested cockatoos, and the second aimed at investigating the potential for an inter-species innovation arms race around the recently emerged bin-opening innovation in sulphur-crested cockatoos.
**The Person** will act as a general lab and field assistant for a small lab group of 5-7 people, consisting of Postdocs, PhD and honours students, and casual research assistants. In this role, and as needed, they will: 1) assist lab members in designing, building or ordering recent experimental equipment and in managing this equipment; 2) undertake field-work in the local area (Canberra, Sydney and Wollongong) on wild birds; 3) work with lab members and casual assistant to undertake various laboratory work including video-coding or processing of genetic/tissue samples; and 4) help manage our existing datasets, including from our citizen-science platform.
We are looking for a Research Officer with experience in field work, programming, and data management. We are looking for someone who likes working with wild birds, problem-solving, engaging in a diverse range of activities, and encourages team members and colleagues to fulfill their research goals. Opportunities to engage with and give input into research questions will be provided, and so the position would suit somebody who enjoys being involved in the active research process, hobby electronics/DIY, and active fieldwork. A driver's license and good level of physical fitness will be necessary for the fieldwork component.
