The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self‑determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high‑quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the ALS Civil Law Fines Clinic, you'll make a real impact by providing civil law advice and support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, supervising staff, and helping grow the ALS Civil Law Practice. Each day, you will:
* Provide high‑quality civil law advice and representation for fines and other civil law matters.
* Supervise junior staff and coordinate the day‑to‑day operations of the ALS Fines Clinic.
* Support vulnerable clients holistically, including referrals for legal and non‑legal assistance.
* Contribute to the development of the ALS Civil Law Practice, including processes, risk management, and service improvement.
* Lead stakeholder engagement, deliver community legal education, and advocate for client interests.
* Represent ALS at meetings, conferences, and contribute to policy, advocacy, and organisational compliance.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated senior leader with a deep understanding of the cultural, social, and historical context shaping the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You combine technical expertise with a genuine commitment to community, justice, and making a real impact. Key strengths include:
* Strong knowledge of and respect for the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
* Legal qualifications with a current NSW Practicing Certificate and a minimum of 4 years of civil law experience.
* Experience representing and advocating for clients in courts, tribunals, and other forums.
* Proven ability to supervise junior staff, manage workloads, and work independently.
* Excellent communication, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
* Desirable: Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity and experience in community‑controlled organisations.
