Overview
Principal Financial Accountant (AO7) role at Queensland Government within the Department of Housing and Public Works. Provide high‑level support to the Director‑General, the leadership team, and the department across financial reporting, governance, and statutory compliance.
The primary purpose of this position is to participate in the preparation of the department's annual financial statements and the preparation and submission of monthly and annual financial reporting packages to Queensland Treasury. This position also provides technical financial accounting information and advice to clients and stakeholders including in relation to accounting implications of various service delivery and financial issues and proposals.
Responsibilities
* Contribute technical expertise in the preparation of the department's annual financial statements, ensuring compliance with statutory reporting legislation, Queensland Treasury's Financial Reporting Requirements, and other prescribed requirements.
* Manage the preparation and submission of monthly and annual financial reporting packages to Queensland Treasury.
* Support the department's asset accounting and debtor management, to ensure assets are accurately recognised, valued, and disposed of in accordance with accounting standards and departmental policy, including contributing to the complex annual property, plant, and equipment valuation process for the department, including the 50-year remaining useful life review.
* Provide high level professional and strategic advice and direction to service areas and shared service providers in relation to financial accounting (including asset and lease accounting), reporting and governance, and participate in the development and implementation of accounting solutions for various service delivery and financial issues and proposals.
* Manage the maintenance of the department's financial accounting framework including maintenance of general ledger chart of accounts and related structures and processes to ensure all internal and external financial reporting and accounting policies and requirements are accommodated as appropriate.
* Contribute to maintaining the department's financial corporate governance framework to foster best financial management practice including appropriate and technically correct accounting policies and governance and the department's Financial Management Practice Manual.
* Maintain effective working relationships with the Queensland Audit Office, internal audit unit, Queensland Treasury and other clients and stakeholders in respect of financial accounting, reporting and governance issues.
* Contribute to fostering an environment that values performance, customer service, equity and fairness, continuous improvement and innovation in the delivery of high quality services, including contributing to relevant internal projects and initiatives within the department.
* Manage teams and resources to deliver a broad work program and ensure teams have the necessary skills, knowledge, and expertise to meet performance expectations and professional development goals.
Mandatory Requirements
* While there are no mandatory requirements for this role, tertiary qualifications with a major in accounting, as well as CPA/CA qualifications will be highly regarded.
