Overview

CNC Machinist – Job Description

The CNC Machinist operates, sets up, and programs CNC machines to produce precision components according to engineering drawings and specifications. The role involves selecting tools, adjusting machine settings, ensuring quality control, and maintaining safe and efficient machining operations.

Responsibilities

* Machine Setup & Operation: Set up CNC machines (mills, lathes, routers, grinders, etc.) with appropriate tools, fixtures, and materials. Operate CNC equipment to produce parts to precise tolerances. Adjust machine speeds, feeds, and offsets as required.
* Programming & Editing: Interpret and work from engineering drawings, blueprints, and CAD/CAM files. Load, test, and edit CNC programs (G-code/M-code) to optimize machining processes. Collaborate with engineers or programmers to improve part accuracy and cycle times.
* Quality Control & Inspection: Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, height gauges, CMMs) to inspect finished products. Verify compliance with specifications and dimensional tolerances. Document inspection results and identify non-conformances.
* Tooling & Maintenance: Select, install, and maintain cutting tools, inserts, and fixtures. Monitor tool wear and replace tooling as needed. Perform routine machine maintenance and cleaning to ensure longevity and reliability.
* Safety & Compliance: Follow all safety procedures, including machine guarding and PPE requirements. Comply with company quality standards (ISO, AS9100, IATF 16949, or industry-specific standards). Maintain a clean and organized work area.
* Production Efficiency: Monitor machine operations and make real-time adjustments to improve output. Minimize scrap, reduce downtime, and optimize machining workflows. Communicate production issues or material shortages to supervisors.

Required Qualifications

* Certificate, diploma, or apprenticeship in Machining, CNC Technology, Manufacturing, or related field.
* Experience operating CNC machines in a manufacturing or machining environment.
* Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and GD&T symbols.
* Knowledge of G-code and CNC controls (Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, Siemens, etc.).
* Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of machining principles.
* Proficient with precision measuring tools and inspection techniques.
* Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
* Exposure to noise, metalworking fluids, and machining equipment.
