Position Statement
The purpose of this position is to provide counselling services to children and their families, delivering effective, innovative and culturally appropriate therapeutic responses to children referred to the service from a range of sources.
The practitioner will work primarily in a therapeutic counselling role, supporting vulnerable children and families, particularly children who have been exposed to family conflict, separation and domestic and family violence.
The role also includes delivering Child-Inclusive Practice within family law and family dispute resolution contexts, through time limited child consultations that support parents' understanding of their child's experiences and needs.
The practitioner is required to comply with the Behaviour Standards outlined in our Safeguarding Children and Young People Practice and Behaviour Guidelines, and to actively participate in cultural safety and cultural fitness practices.
This role is an on-site position.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide both onsite and outreach services that are innovative and culturally appropriate therapeutic counselling responses for children and families who have been affected by family conflict, separation, and domestic and family violence.
* Facilitate opportunities for whole-of-family interventions with parents and kinship carers, emphasizing the impact of these experiences on the child.
* Deliver Child-Inclusive Practice within family law and family dispute resolution contexts, through time-limited child consultations that support parents' understanding of their child's experiences and needs.
* Connect children and families from the target group with appropriate support services and networks.
* Engage with parents and family members through both therapeutic and child-inclusive approaches, ensuring children are not placed in the centre of adult decision-making.
* Maintain clear role boundaries, ensuring therapeutic counselling and child-inclusive practice are not provided concurrently to the same child or family.
* Manage cases with moderate to high levels of complexity, ensuring appropriate therapeutic responses, risk assessment, and safeguarding processes are applied..
* Work from a trauma-informed and strength-based practice lens to support children and families effectively.
* Assess children and families' needs and determine the best therapeutic approach tailored to their unique circumstances.
* Advocate for children and families with service providers and agencies to ensure they receive the necessary support and resources.
* Collaborate with the Therapeutic Team to develop service delivery protocols and practices, including referral and assessment tools.
* Stay informed of relevant legal, ethical, and regulatory requirements, including those relating to family law, child safety, and counselling practice.
* Follow organisational risk management processes, conduct risk assessments, and adhere to safety procedures to ensure the wellbeing of clients and staff.
* Maintain accurate, timely and confidential records in line with organisational policies and legislative requirements.
* Engage in professional development activities, including training in Child-Inclusive Practice as required.
* Promote the program and RA-NT's services where appropriate through professional and community networking.
* Participate in regular line management, supervision, and reflective practice as organised by the Team Leader.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
* Qualifications in Psychology, Social Work or Counselling, and demonstrated eligibility for or current membership of the relevant professional body, or registration with AHPRA.
* Demonstrated experience in the delivery of counselling services to children and families, using a whole-of-family approach, including work with complex trauma, grief and loss, family conflict, and behavioural or emotional difficulties.
* Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of trauma-informed practice, including child development, trauma and attachment theory.
* Demonstrated capacity to engage effectively with children, parents and families in complex and sensitive contexts.
* High-level written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to represent the program and organisation externally
Desirable
* Experience or training in Child-Inclusive Practice, Family Dispute Resolution, or family law–related service contexts (training will be provided).
* Experience working with families affected by separation, post-separation conflict, or domestic and family violence.
* Experience working in culturally diverse settings and a demonstrated commitment to cultural safety.
Requirements
* A satisfactory Northern Territory working with children check (Ochre Card).
* A satisfactory national criminal history check.
* Possession of a current NT Drivers License.
* A commitment to our Safeguarding Children Practice and Behaviour Guidelines.
* Ability to travel remote and domestic when required.
Relationships Australia NT is accredited as a Safeguarding Children organisation with the Australian Childhood Foundation. Therefore, all staff working at RA-NT are required to complete training regarding Safeguarding Children and mandatory reporting upon induction at RA-NT.
