About the Role This is a unique contract opportunity for a skilled Data Scientist to lead the redevelopment of an audit and risk framework that underpins legal service quality assurance. Sitting at the intersection of data analytics and public sector reform, the role involves reviewing the current audit system and designing a new, data-driven, risk-based approach to be implemented within a future grants management system. Your work will directly influence how services are monitored and improved across the legal aid sector in NSW.
Key Responsibilities
* Analyse the existing audit framework and identify gaps, inefficiencies, and areas for improvement
* Design a risk-based audit model tailored to legal service providers
* Identify and define data points required to support the new framework in a digital grants management system
* Develop a detailed report outlining the proposed framework and data requirements
* Collaborate with legal, compliance, and grants system development teams
* Apply statistical analysis and modelling to assess risk patterns and predict service outcomes
* Ensure alignment of the framework with governance, quality, and compliance standards
* Prepare documentation, presentations, and insights for key stakeholders
* Contribute to workshops and system design discussions to embed data requirements effectively
* Monitor project timelines and ensure deliverables are completed within the agreed contract period
About You
* Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field
* Demonstrated experience in data analysis, risk modelling, or audit design within public or private sectors
* Proficiency in statistical and data analytics tools (e.g., Python, R, SQL, or similar)
* Strong understanding of machine learning principles and their practical applications
* Familiarity with data governance, data quality, and regulatory compliance practices
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex ideas clearly
* Prior experience working with or for government agencies, regulatory bodies, or legal services is advantageous
* Highly developed problem-solving skills and ability to work independently or as part of a collaborative team
* Must hold valid Australian working rights – PR, Australian citizen, or long-term working visa required
