Applicants suitable for the role but not offered the current vacancy may be placed in a merit list or pool. If the applicant agrees, results may be shared with other Australian Public Service (APS) agencies for filling similar roles. Applicants may be offered future roles without reapplying. A merit list or pool may be used for up to 18 months.
This merit list or pool may be used to fill other vacancies in Amberley, Darwin, Rockhampton, and Townsville.

The Role

We’re looking for dynamic, solutions-focused individuals to join our high-performing teams as Assistant Base Managers and Estate Management & Planning Managers. As leaders in this space, you’ll play a critical role in managing and operating Defence sites across Australia, leading teams, managing complex issues, and delivering outcomes that enable Defence capability.
Our teams are vital in keeping Defence sites safe, secure, and effective. These roles provide on-the-ground support to ensure smooth operations, respond to incidents, support Defence exercises and operations, and manage risks related to weather events and other emergencies.
Whether preparing for bushfire season, responding to floods, or supporting emergency exercises, our people play a key role in risk management and Defence capability protection. You’ll manage relationships with Defence personnel, contractors, and other agencies to ensure essential services are delivered and infrastructure maintained.
Assistant Base Managers
Provide leadership and coordination across Defence bases, developing high-performing teams to ensure safe and secure operations. They oversee base operations, manage incidents, support Defence activities, and liaise with stakeholders including Defence personnel, service providers, contractors, and communities.
Estate Management & Planning Managers
Provide strategic oversight for planning, developing, and managing the Defence estate. They work with planners, infrastructure teams, and stakeholders to manage land, infrastructure, and assets, ensuring operational needs and future growth are met.
About our Team
Northern and Central Zone is part of the Service Delivery Division within the Security and Estate Group. We enhance Defence capabilities through innovative support, managing key training areas and ranges, and supporting exercises like Pitch Black and Talisman Sabre across Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia.
