Position Summary

The Business, Communications and Publishing Services Group manages the AIHW’s corporate functions that include, HR, facilities, finance, communications and engagement, web, publishing and data visualisation and flagship reporting.

The Web, Publication and Data Visualisation Unit (WPDVU) is responsible for managing AIHW’s primary website, aihw.gov.au. This includes:

· web development (primary site, subsites and bespoke web projects), maintenance and performance

· web content and release production management

· web analytics

· ongoing improvements to enhance production efficiency and user experience

· the design and implementation of data visualisations to support clear and engaging presentations of information and data.

WPDVU also plays a leadership role in guiding and training the Institute’s reporting and authoring teams to deliver best practice content that meets the organisation’s web standards, including accessibility, clarity, and timeliness. On average around 300 analytic reports are presented on the website in pdf, html or both each year. The AIHW has been using a decentralised model for CMS content authoring since 2020 which has allowed us to enhance our capacity for content creation beyond the web team. There are approximately 260 CMS authors across the AIHW, each with varying levels of expertise and experience in HTML web content.

As well as the main AIHW website, WPDVU provides advice on four other AIHW managed websites. The WPDVU works closely with ICT, external web developers, internal authors, internal project managers and the Strategic Communications Unit.

The AIHW is currently developing a long-term web strategy to ensure the website continues to evolve in alignment with stakeholder and user needs. An initial project has been completed to explore a future web vision, which was tested with key external stakeholders to validate assumptions and gather feedback. This will form the foundation of the future web strategy, guiding the development of a more responsive, accessible and user-focused digital presence.

The Business, Communications and Publishing Services Group is looking for a Unit Head to lead a multidisciplinary team of web, publishing, and data visualisation specialists. They are responsible for delivering both business-as-usual operations and strategic initiatives, including innovative web product development and implementation of the long-term web strategy. The role requires a confident communicator and manager with a strong understanding of digital publishing, data and content management systems, capable of engaging with technical specialists and non-technical stakeholders alike.

Unit Heads make a major contribution to the formulation of strategies and objectives in line with corporate goals of the Institute and take an active role in developing and promoting the Institute’s business activity. In addition to expertise in their professional field, they need advanced managerial skills to fulfil their supervisory responsibilities.

Under broad direction you will:

· Provide leadership, direction and performance management to staff in the Unit to ensure the delivery of website services through the effective management of physical, financial, technological information and human resources.

· With assistance from a special project team take a leading role developing and implementing the organisation’s long-term web strategy, ensuring alignment with stakeholder expectations, user needs, and emerging digital trends.

· Foster strong cross-functional relationships with ICT, Strategic Communications, external developers, and internal project teams to ensure cohesive and effective digital delivery.

· Support the team to develop and review relevant AIHW policies and procedures and prepare internal management reports as needed.

· Make a major contribution to the formulation of strategies and objectives in line with corporate goals and take an active role in developing and promoting the Institute’s business activity.

Selection Criteria

Our ideal candidate will have most or all the following skills and knowledge:

1. Shapes strategic thinking: This is about your ability to understand the link between the work of the unit, the institute, whole of government agenda. This is demonstrated by your analytical thinking and sound judgement to translate strategic objectives to operational goals. You will also need an understanding of the strategic environment and key stakeholders of the AIHW, including understanding the agendas of relevant non-federal entities and data suppliers.

2. Achieves results: This is about your commitment to working towards the delivery of outcomes and your ability to draw on your own and others’ expertise to achieve these goals. It is also about how you deal with and implement change.

3. Cultivates productive working relationships: This encapsulates teamwork, respect for your colleagues, and building and nurturing internal and external collaborative working relationships, including with funders, data suppliers, and users of statistical reports. It also entails developing, supporting, and mentoring staff.

4. Exemplifies personal drive and integrity: This is about pushing yourself to achieve your work goals while maintaining integrity and confidentiality. It includes providing impartial and forthright advice and facing challenges constructively.

5. Communicates with influence: This emphasises the importance of excellence in oral and written communication with all your internal and external stakeholders, colleagues, and clients. It is also about your ability to negotiate mutually beneficial outcomes.

6. Relevant expertise: Relevant expertise includes experience leading high performing teams in the areas of communication, web design and publishing, data visualisation, and information management, or the management of a program of work in this area. Knowledge or expertise in building an organisational web strategy is highly desirable.

Eligibility

A probationary period of six (6) months will apply to any new engagement to the APS.
