Description
Lithgow City Council has an exciting opportunity for a Cadet Planner to join their team in Lithgow, NSW on a temporary term contract. You will be currently studying a degree level qualification in Town or Land use Planning or similar, within your second to last year or last year of study.
The Cadet Planner will work under direction to contribute to the development of the Lithgow Local Government Area (LGA) through assisting with the delivery of Council's planning functions for the built and natural environments. The Cadet Planner operates within Council's Development Unit which includes Development Assessment, Building and development certification, Strategic land Use Planning and Planning administration. You will be trained by senior staff who will ensure a training plan is developed to complement your university subjects with the ability to rotate through the various Council work locations as part of a comprehensive development program.
More specifically, your duties will include (but will not be limited to):
* Comply with responsibilities relating to the terms of the Training Contract as a Cadet (training attendance and attainment of all relevant qualifications and competencies).
* Undertake all allocated work as part of the on-the-job training supplied by Lithgow City Council or its project partners.
* Assist in the assessment processing of Development Applications and building certification related activities, and strategic land use and development planning initiatives and projects in accordance with relevant legislation and Council policies.
* Assist with the development of technical advice on development and building matters to other Council staff, senior management, the elected Council, developers and the community.
* Provide planning and development administrative and operational support, including monitoring and reporting on project plans, milestones, and deliverables, to ensure time, cost and quality indicators are in line with approved project plans and knowledge gained through studies.
* Provide planning and development administrative and operational support including coordinating meetings, preparing agendas, meeting documentation and other tasks to support the delivery of planning and development functions.
* Demonstrate a strong customer focus which is accurate, current, responsive and timely to internal and external clients.
* Maintain proper records in accordance with Councils procedures/policies and legislation.
* Provide accurate, timely and professional advice to internal and external customers, including reports, briefings and other correspondence that is clear, concise, and comprehensive, and properly reflects Council's policies and codes.

About You
The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:
* Studying of a tertiary qualification in a Town or Land use Planning or similar, within second to last year or last year of study.
* Ability to work constructively independently and as part of a team, including the ability to prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines, to achieve team and organisational outcomes.
* Sound research and analytical skills with an ability to analyse information and use initiative to research, develop and present reports.
* Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to assist in completing planning activities.
* High level of written and oral communication skills coupled with proficiency in MS office suite and GIS mapping applications.
* Current Class C Drivers Licence.
* Demonstrated ability to apply EEO, WHS and ethical principles and to always act with probity.

Salary and Benefits

* Commencing salary $1,124.90 per (35) hours per week, commensurate with your skills, qualifications and experience.
* Part-time, 21 hours/3 days per week, however subject to full time (35) per week during semester breaks.
