**Job Description**:
The Sydney Morning Herald is looking for a Crime Reporter to combine breaking news, analysis and some feature writing capability at the highest-level across our digital and print platforms. Strong journalistic experience is required with a good range of contacts in the crime area.
The role is responsible for content gathering and for delivering clean, accurate copy for both print and digital use.
Day to day you will:
- Deliver unique, high quality journalism across platforms.
- Generate unique content ideas for daily and weekly news cycle
- Maintain an extensive network of contacts/sources.
- Prepare clear, accurate, balanced, well-written and well-researched reports that conform to style for publication across platforms.
- Ensure all copy meets legal requirements.
- Take ownership of stories/issues and follow up stories when appropriate.
- Demonstrate excellent news judgement and knowledge of current affairs.
- Ensure the highest standard of accuracy, ethics and editorial quality.
- Write an appropriate and agreed number of quality stories as commissioned, to appropriate length and in a timely manner.
- Meet agreed audience benchmarks and deadlines.
Some weekend work may be required. Hybrid working arrangements
**Qualifications**:
The successful applicant will display the highest of ethical standards and work relentlessly and creatively to ensure we develop quality content across seven days and across platforms. They will have a proven track record of breaking news, and the ability to quickly develop deep contacts and expertise in their assigned areas.
- Strong journalistic background.
- A good range of contacts in the crime area.
- First rate news judgement.
- Proven ability to identify, articulate and develop quality stories in the crime field.
- Ability to work collaboratively across The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and national teams
- Excellent organisation and time management skills.
