The Role
The APS 5 Work Health and Safety (WHS) Advisor plays a critical role in supporting Defence work health and safety outcomes by contributing to the development, implementation, coordination and continuous improvement of WHS systems, programs and compliance activities.
Within the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Group, the role supports the effective management of WHS risks by providing sound, practical advice on legislation, policy and outcomes focused safety solutions. The WHS Advisor engages with a broad range of stakeholders including product directorates, senior leadership, contractors and regulators to promote a safe and compliant working environment across Defence sites.
About our Team
The GWEO Group Work Health and Safety Team supports a large, diverse stakeholder group across multiple Defence sites. The team works closely with internal business areas and contractors to influence positive safety outcomes through engagement, compliance support, reporting and continuous improvement. The team is small, collaborative and committed to fostering a strong safety culture.
Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be a motivated, adaptable and detail oriented WHS professional who:
* Demonstrates sound knowledge of WHS legislation and compliance requirements, or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
* Provides accurate, timely and practical advice on the application of WHS legislation, Codes of Practice, Defence policies, GWEO Group safety policies and procedures.
* Takes initiative, manages competing priorities effectively, and delivers outcomes within deadlines.
* Prepare, review and maintain WHS compliance activities, procedures and documentation.
* Actively seeks learning and development opportunities to enhance subject matter expertise.
* Contributes positively to team culture and upholds Defence values.
* Coordinate, monitor and report on WHS compliance activities, identifying emerging, systemic and operational risks and recommending appropriate mitigation strategies.
* Conduct research, analysis, WHS reviews, risk assessments, inspections, investigations and reporting to improve safety performance and outcomes.
* Generate WHS reports, briefings and performance data as requested, including trend analysis and recommendations.
