Located at Chemical Engineering Building (J01) on the Darlington Campus Provide expertise knowledge and technical support to researchers and students Base Salary HEO7 $112, 628 - $122,702 p.a. 17% superannuation About the opportunity The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for an experienced Staff Engineer to join the team and provide sound expert advice, supervision, guidance and technical support to researchers and students using the technical areas of the School of Chemical Engineering and across the Technical Support Services (TSS) spaces. The Staff Engineer will collaborate closely with researchers and key educators, contributing expert technical input to support ongoing research initiatives. Acting as a primary point of contact for researchers within the Technical Area, the role facilitates effective communication and coordination across projects. The position is responsible for ensuring that all activities within the work area comply with applicable Work Health and Safety (WHS) standards, aligning with University policy and relevant legislation. In addition, the Staff Engineer provides specialist expertise in emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices relevant to the Technical Area, and communicates these effectively to stakeholders. The role requires a commitment to continuous professional development, enhancing both technical capability and interpersonal effectiveness, while contributing to the achievement of strategic objectives at a local level. Your key responsibilities will be to: provide timely, sound, and effective technical support, training and professional engineering advice to staff, researchers and students in the following technical areas provide sound teaching support for Unit of Study related to chemical engineering, materials engineering and chemistry laboratories, supervision/co-supervision and/or guidance and technical expertise to students, project teams and interns while using facility resources provide sound, specialist advice and support to the development and implementation of the ongoing research strategy related to the Technical Area of Chemical Engineering, materials engineering, and chemistry laboratories and in alignment with TSS overall objectives work in collaboration with academic researchers, technical staff and other TSS team members to develop action plans for research and educational work being undertaken in the Technical Area ensure that the Technical Area's systems, reporting, and documentation requirements are met, including governance and ethics reporting plan and manage the effective utilisation of resources within the designated area of responsibility, in alignment with the TSS overall strategy and objectives proactively lead the users of the Technical Area in best practices and awareness of University policies and relevant WHS/compliance legislation, standards, codes, policies, guidelines, and local provisions. About you bachelor's degree - Chemical Engineering/Environmental Engineering or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with matters experience in supporting research in wet and dry Chemical/Environmental and Biomolecular Engineering laboratory environments to improve regulatory compliance and operational efficiencies proven OHS knowledge and experience in complex Chemical Engineering teaching and research environment Experience and knowledge in safe chemicals handling, waste management and disposal significant and relevant experience in managing/planning/supporting technical teams to provide services to researchers, along with experience in scaling, troubleshooting, and developing practical classes demonstrated experience in Water/Wastewater management (desired).
