**About the role**
In this role, you will manage Council's waste services operations to ensure effective implementation and optimum delivery aligned with the Council's Waste Management strategy.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the management of waste business operations including landfill, resource recovery centres, green organic processing centre, commercial bin collection programs, former landfills and transfer stations.
- Guiding the development and implementation of waste reduction strategies that align with the principles of circular economy
- identifying opportunities and trends to reduce waste generation, promoting recycling and reuse, and finding ways to divert waste from landfills.
- Managing contracts and relationships with waste management service providers to ensure that services are delivered to the required standards and within budget. Lead the development and review of service level agreements for waste services.
- Monitoring and reporting on waste management performance, including waste reduction targets, recycling rates, and landfill diversion rates.
- Leading the resolution of key waste issues. Leading a continuous improvement in waste by guiding the business to proactively address problems and initiate changes in response to the cues in the external environment.
- Leading and developing the Waste Services team, ensuring that staff are trained and equipped with the necessary skills and resources to perform their roles effectively
- providing timely feedback, coaching, and mentoring, as well as identifying opportunities for professional development and career progression.
- Managing the department's budget, including planning and forecasting, monitoring expenditures, and identifying opportunities for cost savings by undertaking resource-based budgeting, plant replacement fees and charges, and putting together business cases.
**About you**
To be successful in this role, you will have operational management experience within the waste services fields including a good understanding of current issues and trends, relevant legal implications and asset management principles.
Essential Experience:
- Tertiary qualifications in waste management, sustainability or environmental sciences, business or others relevant to the position.
- Ability to think strategically, analytically and conceptually to develop and manage complex issues regarding waste.
- Knowledge of waste legislation and its impacts on all Council operations.
- Demonstrated experience in operational planning and delivery including stakeholder engagement within a waste services context.
- Well-developed communication (written/oral) and presentation skills and demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders.
- Solid negotiation skills as well as the ability to articulate and influence outcomes at a senior level.
- Extensive contract management skills and experience in managing waste contracts and projects, including issues resolution.
