The University of Wollongong (UOW) Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) is seeking expressions of interest for membership of the Committee to fulfil the requirements of a Category A (Veterinarian) member.

A Category A member must be a person with qualifications in veterinary science that are recognised for registration as a veterinary surgeon in Australia, and with experience relevant to UOW's activities or the ability to acquire relevant knowledge.

The University of Wollongong AEC reviews the ethical and scientific aspects of animal research and teaching at the University. Under NSW legislation, animals may only be used for research or teaching if approval has been granted following submission of a formal application to the AEC.

The University reviews 12-20 new research applications per year in addition to reviewing amendments to existing projects, unexpected event reports and annual review reports. These projects relate to projects in areas ranging from medical research through to wildlife and conservation studies. A small number of projects relate to the use of animals in teaching.

The AEC has eight full meetings per year and 4 to 5 shorter subcommittee meetings per year attended by a subset of the committee on a rotational basis. Full committee meetings are hybrid both in-person and online on. Subcommittee meetings are held online on or alternate days depending on member availability. Members are expected to attend 80% of full meetings per year, are required to read the meeting papers prior to the meetings and submit any preliminary questions they have. The application is discussed by all members at the meeting and a decision made or further questions returned to the researcher. Committee members also may also participate in animal facility inspections.

Training

Members must undertake online training in the ethical review process and animal research regulation. Additional training opportunities via webinars and seminars are available throughout the term of membership.
